I will admit, with SPM it's truly a YMMV experience. I do like the story and the characters, since they have depth befitting the Paper Mario series, and the world of Flipside and Flopside is pretty rich. However, the switch to a more Platformer/RPG hybrid was ambitious, though not as well liked because it's the Jack of Stats, Master of None situation.

That and people gave SPM a second look once the likes of Sticker Star came into play

Maybe nostalgia, maybe contrarian, but at the time, SPM was mixed exactly because of what you said

On the whole, I prefer Mario RPGs like Mario and Luigi because they are, at heart, pretty silly stories that you don't need to think too hard with, and the two get personalities through their animations and faux-Italian gibberish makes them all the more likeable to me
