Comparing GoW to its contemporaries at the time like Shadow of the Colossus, Silent Hill 2, Prince of Persia, Jak/Ratchet/Sly, it's just as story focused as any of those triple a games. Unless you were an RPG, there simply wasn't that much story to tell.
