That's what BPs are for. But buying gem skins doesn't hurt. It really just depends on your aesthetic. Most BPs are cutesy type of aesthetic, big and wet eyes, colorful hair, cute animal fronts, lots of pastels, etc. Some people are sick of it and avoid BPs for that reason, some people genuinely enjoy it.

If you have a specific aesthetic that you want to achieve then you just have to buy the skins and do matching Clan Quests to get the items you like. A lot of people loved the Mafia season because it was darker and used firearms and booze as the main symbols of power.
