Compasses are cool but they would be extremely useless in the game because of the amount of recognizable landmarks condensed into a smallish map.
As for the STHD example, it would be more useful to just be given the general area or landmark that the raider was in rather than a heading because raiders have legs and can use their legs to move around. It's also more work to take the heading compared to it only taking like less than a second to say a landmark. Also kind of weird its only exclusive to STHD, but why not I guess.
If you need help with navigation, there are plenty of maps and guides out there for you to memorize or note down.
