In the Youth team, the focus is mainly on the main skill and when it's trained close to or at maximum (100), there isn't the option to change his position in the Youth team, so it is a good idea to promote him in the meantime, once his main skill is close to max.
If you decide to promote him in the main team, then it's important to have the training building level at max and a good Assistant coach.
Once those conditions are met, you can then switch his position to train the other skills faster.
