#My son was banned from Pretendo

Guys, I understand your situation, but I would like to ask you to understand ours. We recently acquired a Wii U, which is absurdly expensive and difficult to obtain in our country. It really is the result of a great deal of effort. We were having a great time as a family, especially after we managed to set up and use Pretendo, which was also not easy because we are not fluent in English. After some time, my son ended up making a post that led to a ban. With the natural behavior of a child, he ended up trying to resolve the issue on his own and I think he ended up trying to create another account, which apparently resulted in a ban on the device.

Gentlemen, this is a child trying to have fun in a somewhat complicated world and using a non-native language with a lot of effort and dedication.

I would like to ask you to review this ban, which from our perspective, does not result in anything positive. Neither in terms of learning for the user nor for the platform itself.

I would also ask that you try to be objective, explaining what needs to be done. We are not experts in the field, nor do we intend to cause any discomfort on the platform, we just tried to use something that brought a lot of joy to our family.

His username was: farofeiro

I await your considerations.

You need to set up Parental Controls on your Wii U

We play together, and his online activity is closely monitored. I imagine that all of you are parents too and understand how things work in the real world.
Seeing the attempt he made here on discord, there were a series of mistakes that we discussed with him, right after the incident. On the other hand, there was a series of mockery and misunderstandings.
I am here humbly trying to resolve this sequence of misunderstandings.
The blocking of the devices at this time also prevents any other type of solution.
I firmly believe that dialogue is always the best alternative.

It's a shame he had to get an adult to come here to get this fixed, but hopefully this will get sorted out.

Yes, I am aware of this. That is why I created the account that was the first to be banned. In desperation after seeing the ban, he created another account, and in desperation after the device was banned, he researched how to solve it and came here, on discord. And so we are at this point.
He wrongly revealed his age here, in an attempt to show that he had made some mistakes that he was not fully aware of the severity of.
As I said, the opinion of all of you who are also parents is very welcome, as you certainly have experience in these situations. We are not perfect and we cannot control 100% of our children's day. In the same way, we were all children once and made mistakes out of pure and simple naivety. And the tools for monitoring online activity are excellent, but they are limited. We use as many as possible, but not everything is perfect in the real world.
I also think that a permanent punishment for a situation like this is far from being able to generate a lesson. A permanent punishment for something like this only generates anger. Certainly, the mistakes that have been made will never be repeated if there is a possibility of moving forward. However, when we put up a definitive barrier based on something that is far from being 'extremely serious', we run the risk of encouraging the search for solutions that will be incorrect and harmful.

the intent was to actually appeal after 1 month

#

but they admitted to be underage and we had to ban them from the Discord server because against ToS

I understand that.

if you get your console unbanned, try creating separate users: one or more Pretendo users for ages 13+, and standard (no PNID) users for underage users.
then lock the PNID users behind a password that has to be entered every time you select the user

#

then again this could be bypassed also

#

since the underage user could still potentially create another PNID

but if @jade gazelle is correct then there's not really any way they can stop their child from accessing the services

#

if the console gets unbanned i can say it cant happen again. a child on the network is its own legal risk. they already had 4 accounts be banned

hushed elm
#

so yeah, theoretically the parent(s) could restrict Internet access for the child's devices during times of the day

#

using special tools that an ISP may have

#

or cell service provider

graceful raft
#

i am not the actual person deciding this. but if they were to continue i cant see any other out other then a console ban. the only guarantied thing we have.

hushed elm
#

yeah.

all i am saying is if there was a unban it has to be taken seriously

but yeah, for now we should wait on quarkashquarky.

Guys, as I said before, he ended up taking desperate actions because he was scared by the block/ban. In fact, he didn't even understand at first that it was a ban. He insisted on creating other accounts thinking that would solve the problem. Anyway, he made mistakes and I assure you that a lesson was learned.
We use time restrictions on the router we have at home, I use Family Link on my cell phone, etc. But really, here in the real world, things are not totally controllable. Anyway, my son usually has exemplary behavior, and due to immaturity he ended up making a comment in a post that was judged as homophobic. Regarding use by children, let's be honest: there are countless children using Pretendo without any kind of supervision, I see this in the real world. We don't need to pretend that it doesn't happen, the real world exists. My son almost always uses electronics under supervision and does not display any type of behavior that would be considered homophobic, much less any abusive behavior regarding the use of any network, games or anything else. He is encouraged, on a daily basis, to seek solutions to the problems he encounters, and that is what he did. Unfortunately, he did it without knowing the rules and he ended up learning from that. It was undoubtedly a great learning experience.

I assure you that there is no reason to fear any inappropriate action from him or anyone in our family after the unban I am requesting.

All measures will be taken, such as parental controls and other tools.

@ruby hamlet your verdict?

we need a little time to review this one due to potential legal concerns, will update you

The console ban will be removed, but the accounts made by child will remain banned. Pretendo's typical procedure is to ban the account. If a lot of account bans come from one console that console will be banned. If more accounts from this console get banned, the console ban will be reinstated. This is the only way we can adequately secure our services

So yeah, OP definitely make sure to do what you can. Set up Parental Controls, monitor your child's online activity, be in the room when he plays on the Wii U

jade gazelle
graceful raft
#

yes you would need to make a new account

jade gazelle
#

So we will do that in the next few days. I really appreciate your understanding and I want to make it clear that I am completely in favor of controlling the use of the platform and following the rules that are in place. Unfortunately, this situation has happened to us.
I wish you all the best!
