Hello, not currently using Pretendo but curious about using it post shutdown. I have a few questions to ask, hope here is the best place to do so? Very sorry if it isn't would rather not spam the live chat.

First, do you need a homebrewed console to use this service? If so, will homebrew install methods for 3DS and Wii U still work after online shuts down? Do homebrews still work for the latest 3DS update?

I saw on the Pretendo website progress tracking for certain games and their online modes. Will this mean Pretendo can run custom servers even after the Nintendo online closure? Mainly asking for Splatoon. Will pretendo servers mean one will be able to level up and open the shops post-closure?

Yes to all of this. See https://hacks.guide these have been updated recently to work even after the shutdown, and with the recent 3DS update

Yes, the games listed there are at least in-progress to work with pretendo custom servers. Note that only a few are actually live right now, splatoon is one of them though
Not 100% sure about shops but I assume yes
I believe the website progress report is a bit outdated as I think matchmaking was working (the status for splatoon hasn't been updated in a very long time) but I haven't actually loaded up the game on pretendo yet to see

If you want to keep your current splatoon progress (level, gear, money, single player progress) you will need to backup and transfer your save data, as pretendo requires using a new account on your console

# keen estuary does the backup need to be done pre shutdown?

If you mean backup of your own console or save data, no, you can do it whenever

The only reason you'd want to rush and backup this data is because the Wii U has a high failure rate for its internal storage, although the console would stop working entirely in this case, so it may be kinda moot unless you can repair or replace it

Network dumps are the only thing that cannot be done after the shutdown, but this is not something that is required

Does a 64 GB work on a wii u?

For SD card (to hold mod files)? Yes, I use a sandisk 64GB microSD for both my Wii U and 3DS

For external USB drive (for game storage), avoid flash drives as they are generally unreliable - go with an SSD or HDD, which will have more space anyways. Make sure you have a y-cable (two USB plugs) that plugs into both USB ports on the wii u

64GB is technically the minimum to do a full NAND backup on the black/deluxe wii u (though not required, as you can do a partial backup which is enough for brick protection) so I wouldn't go smaller
Larger is fine, the 3DS has issues with larger cards, but wii u is fine

Make sure to format properly using guiformat as described in the guide https://wiiu.hacks.guide or it won't recognize the card

So pretendo now works on Wii U with no hacking needed, but you still need to create a specific pretendo-linked profile to use it, right? And so you'd still need to hack and copy save files to retain your progress on splatoon, for example?
