If I could summarize, it'd be more like this...

While each server is it's own process, they don't all consume a lot of CPU time. Matchmaking (secure) and Authentication servers are the most intesive, and of those, splatoon is definitely the most active. Even on one core, this would normally be fine if there weren't so many players because the other servers will steal only so many instructions before jumping to the next program. Friends and other non-game servers are very minimal and only handle a few functions every so often (updating your presence, for example). Once that loop is done, it's over.
Matchmaking is way more intense than anything the other servers are doing, including auth. The server has to handle packet communications for lobbies as a middleman the entire time, which is both intense and prone to error.

and to clarify the server situation, you don't have to buy any specific server to run this stuff. Pretendo can run on basically any VPS that has access to Golang, which is basically all of them
