Revisiting composing for a project of mine and i remembered i wanted to be woodwind heavy (bc birds). Recently extended this to aerophones in general but im not sure how to narrow instruments down further for specific characters

How to figure out instrument choice/aerophone vibes?

It's a bit dated, but rimsky-korsakov's orchestration manual talks a bit about this. You can find it in the academia music library gdrive (resources channel on this server)

I think of it as "flutes go tweet like budgies, oboes go honk like geese, clarinets go hoot like owls, bassoons go honk like swans", maybe that's useful for bird stuff? Lol

To be honest I'd suggest just listening to some pieces and hearing what sounds like what - birdsong has been imitated sosny times that there's plenty to listen out for

I vaguely remember hearing that some string gives body to woodwinds, but i am not sure what that means

The only thing ive seen for birds is that one flute bird in the wolf song???

#

not good with names i apologize

#

lore reason for bird aerophone is how their breathing is different (so they’d be cracked at it) but i totally forgot the. Actual bird of it yknow??

Artless. Pathetic

I think artless is a positive term here, meaning like "innocent" or "guileless"

I find the flute and oboe in morning mood very birdlike tbh

We did a piece for solo flute & strings from a local composer's "The Birds Suite" at our last concert that was alright, I can't find any recordings of it though 😅
