Hello, I am analyzing the motive played by the harp in ff7 prelude

The pattern is straight forward but how would you name the last 2 chords ?

#

I’d say they basically outline the first two chords of the ♭VI -♭VII - I cadence, but since it loops the I is actually in elision with the first chord of the sequence.

#

So at the very least I’d respell to reflect that

waxen python
#

isnt't ♭VI -♭VII - "i" usually found in minor chord progressions?

#

indeed, C# and D# appears to be bVI and bVII in the key of F

#

does it imply any particular mode ?

#

So the progression is ♯V - ♯VI or bVI - bVII ?

#

is it a common move to use #V #VI ? Does it have any particular name or a mode ?

little pulsar
#

I don’t think it is ever♯V - ♯VI

#

it’s borrowed from, like, aeolian mode, so it’d be spelled ♭VI -♭VII - < I > always

#

It’s been used in concert, film, and pop music for a long time, but we usually associate it with video games thanks to things like Mario and FF

#

It’s often called the Mario Cadence or Fanfare Cadence because of this

#

despite not being a cadence

#

Well…ish

light raptor
#

♭VII - i/I would be a cadence, assuming it is in fact at a cadence point

waxen python
#

So it’s borrowed from the parallel minor and instead of finishing on i, it ends on I

#

Any exemple of a track that use this exact move and that you can think of right now ?

light raptor
#

I mean I just wrote a lil melody over those chords

#

I don't think that counts though kekw

it said C♯ and D♯ so I used C♯ and D♯

#

(they should almost certainly be D♭ and E♭, respectively)

#

it also shows up in Dire Dire Docks

little pulsar
#

Yep! I just mocked up a SNES-style version of that today in fact

light raptor
#

ayyy

I’d share it here but my rig is powered off for the night

#

Might share if I remember tomorrow

light raptor
#

honestly I bet there's a bunch of 16th century music that does what we might perhaps nowadays label as ♭VI - ♭VII - I

#

It’s a super common harmonic choice

"mario cadence" overrated

#

At 0:47 it modulates from the key of A major to F# major via a D and E chord (those being the IV and V in A, but the bVI and bVII in F#) which is the coolest shit ever
