After a day away from the console, as soon as I loaded ACC it showed me the initial license agreement message. On opening the game my driver ratings were still there plus saved replays but everything else was gone. All saved cars and setups were gone. All game settings ( controls, audio, etc ) were back to default. Why is this and how do I get them back?

This sounds like your cloud save didn't load/sync correctly. Replays are stored locally which is why those were showing up.

As all my other settings went to default is it worth it reinstalling the game if I've got to start everything from scratch

Try just restarting the xbox. The next time the game boots up, it should ask which save file you want to keep.

I restarted it twice. Then switched off and on again. Same. It even said it was syncing but nothing came back.
I know the message you mean, local on one side, cloud on the other. Not seen that message for a while.

Just making new setups as I go along, not so bad I guess. Still a ball ache to have to do,it but I'm making a backup elsewhere each time
