People called that thing "Mimic" because it mimics a human voice. With DX and us finding the dead "Specimen 22" on the floor shortly after Schaeffer killed something in the audio log, a popular interpretation is that the Mimic and Specimen 22 are the same thing.

As to what it actually is:
We can't know for sure right know but we have some hints at it being an artificially grown, human-like creature, created through "Project Rise". This project was apparently being worked on as an alternative to the Legion Program. So artificial humans instead of controlling "normal" humans.
