imo, i think shaeffer loses it because he is infected with the virus and it has progressed in him because he hasn't gone back into an hsu like the prisoners do (which can kill the virus) and it's making him crazy. Just based on the wiki and the conversation between the 2 schaeffers where the sane schaeffer is surprised to learn that the crazy one is infected. Violent behavior is one of the symptoms and without seeing schaeffer while he's still alive, it's hard to say for certain. Sorry for the long post and I could totally be wrong.

ultimately we will never know, however i do have a couple things i may add.

schaeffer is extremely distrustful of the warden, and would in no way ever consider re-entering Hydrostasis to cleanse himself. Given the fact that nam-v infection is expected to be lethal within 5 weeks of initial infection, it is unlikely that he made it this long while being infected, and assuming he was infected only recently, it wouldn't explain how he has remained mostly consistent between rundowns. (r8 being the exception, but i doubt enough time would have passed to develop significant symptoms after r7, especially with henriksson watching over him)

they were the first humans to be warped

in OG they get sent to destination (desert dimension) where they get stranded, find sleepers and fuckin die

and in the ending we see that the clean wordline was infact the one where ALT durant ended up, and clearly he and his team managed to survive there

as for why we betray the other team its cause they kinda internalize what schaeffer was screaming in b4 and c2, that it's very likely they don't want copies of em, and so we just decide [on a very impulsive moment after a very hard mission] to just pretend we are schaeffer and trick em

We do Land into a KDS (Not so) deep with a Matter Wave Teleporter

So in that Timeline they did find the artifacts down in the Garganta, but somehow did manage to conquer the Virus outbreak

So there is a fair Chance that they Could cure our protags

(or they Just washed they hands with soap after returning from Brasil and didnt even have the outbreak)

In og, he was warped with his team (and escorts) to Destination, where all but Bishop died.

In alt, he went to an unknown jungle planet and supposedly (proven by the fact he is talking to us here), they all survived

The coordinates we recover from insight (the organization he was a part of), are what we imput into the MWP to get here

It's is classified as the only unexplored worldline, potentially because he and his team were stranded and never reported back.

They'd need to;

1. isolate for MIN 5 weeks with zero contact
2. have their own microhabitat of filtered oxygen as NAM-V is airborne
3. have said filters be isolated without any physical contact for MIN 5 weeks (pref by robots)
4. have said robots be isolated for MIN 5 weeks with no contact and a filtered/or oxygenless environment
5. incinerate any/all clothing/biological matter (plant cotton primarily if transferable)
6. sanitize and isolated all non-biological matter for a MIN of 5 weeks
7. monitor health of KSOs/or potentially infected individuals for a further 1-2 weeks after the 5 week minimum has passed with no symptoms
8. transfer them to a decontamination chamber and provide the equivalent to a radioactive waste wash down by fully sealed and protected personnel

If someone shows any symptoms at all, they are donezo. Shot on sight from as far away as humanly possible. It transfers from air, water, physical contact, according to Dauda's tests and human experimentation, the only environment that was successful in preventing its spread was the vacuum of space because there is literally nothing for it to spread through

Additionally, it can survive over a month on surfaces without any assistance.

And if you do catch it, even without the parasite being involved whatsoever, it is 100% lethal. Even if your immune system begins to fight it and bounce back, it will simply go temporarily dormant, mutate to hard counter you, then kick your ass until you are grass

During which the entire time you are spreading it to anything and everything within a huge radius because airborne/waterborne

I know the HSU is used to kill the NAM-V virus (and any possible parasites that got in), but the level R2C2 (i think that was it; the one with the constant alarm from drop) the alarm is due to a previous groups of prisoners that disobeyed the warden's orders and were subsequently killed. There's also the log about the KSO clone experiments. Were those previous clones?

...or is it just that the lore is we have the OG crew and the Alt:// crew and they do their respective worldline stories?

I'm fairly certain the prisoners are mostly just personnel from the legion program and have not been cloned in any way shape or form (cloning entities is a bit of a different part of the lore)

as the story goes on and even before gameplay, as the collector's MWP has been used, errors or glitches have occured with it. for example, Insight, back when garganta was still alive and kicking, they had lost countless scientists AND AN ENTIRE WING OF THEIR LAB to glitches with it, and in r6, we can see this happen just when we pick up the damn thing for the first time in a1, same with the data cubes that power it in c1.

... and we just keep using it. over, and over, and over, making it get weirder and weirder. until eventually, it passes a threshold and these glitches get way out of hand, like in r8b2? (i dont remember), there is SAND AND CRYSTALS from DESTINATION on EARTH, not to mention the dozens of corpses of our squad from the different worldlines

in r8, at least 6 have merged

Simple idea:

When the inner body parts push outwards. So the clothes are pressed to the inside and decompose in the way they overlap.

But what if:

The clothes don't extinct and are still inside their bodies.
It's not their tongue they're hitting us with, it's their clothes that are tied together and they're choking them at us with a lot of speed, like some of these magic tricks

Yes. They aren't the intestines of the host either, they appear to be just a super beefed up and mutated tongue that was split and rejoined. (The "mouth" is more like a grabber than anything, think the Graboids from Tremors).

In the case of sleepers though, their tongues are more likely simply to have a ranged whip like defense mechanism, and to "bite" and transmit the virus
