It's being a game store/launcher, it doesn't need things like workshop or discussions or whatever, I was using steam way before it had those features too so it's not a must. Also Epic only takes a 12% cut, that's roughly $11 more for a $60 game. Now that's $11 million more for the developers for every 1 million copy sold. That's what epic is doing for the game, taking a reasonable cut.

The thing is, you ultimately don't need these services to install some files, create a .exe and run it; pc games have been doing that since pc games started existing on cds/floppys

but if certain platforms begin taking away games from other platforms and locking it down to their own platform, you begin going back to the original issue that made things like steam so popular (a single point to buy and recieve updates), and creating the issue that's beginning to plague the on demand tv streaming industry (hey you need to pay for netflix, hulu etc. to get any variety in media)
