The first hit should be a fully charged hit to the back of the head to maximize damage, it'll be stunned for a second or two, which leaves you just enough time to charge your hammer near full and hit a leg or arm. If you charged enough it'll break the limb and stun it again, then you just repeat on other limbs until dead. It's possible alone but easier the more people you have. You also can't do it if anything is right next to the giant since you'll need to be moving around (unless one of you kills whatever is close while the other handles the giant, but that can be a bit hard, especially if you're new)

oh yeah another thing is that they don't stay stunned long enough for a full hammer charge, so you'll have to just do a near full or you'll risk it screaming/attacking (but not too little for it to not break the limb)
I also recommend moving away slightly while charging, move in to hit, then back off a meter or two again to charge, because otherwise you might trigger its close range thrashing attack which hurts
giant kills are definitely difficult to get down at the beginning, but once you figure it out it eventually becomes fairly simple :]
