If enemy is in a different room from the sentry then there is an additional requirement that they have LoS of the sentry.
So sentry right around a corner won't alert anything in a neighbouring room
(There is no LoS requirement if enemy and sentry are in the same room and unlike guns there is no room distance 'fall off' for being in different rooms - just the added LoS requirement)

For extra trivia: mines behave similarly to a shooting sentry with a 20m range. However their LoS point is typically located inside the floor/wall so they're almost always silent when placed in a different room from an enemy.
Extra extra trivia: mines (and probably sentries too though I'd have to check) use the room of the player at the time they were placed for determining which "room they are in", so you can do funky stuff by placing them across a room boundary
