each function is pretty modular, the DoT on its own is fine to have. it's an iterative process, you design the flamethrower, implement how it fires, implement the numbers like ammo/dmg/aoe, etc. You can design an initial flamethrower that simply shoots like a gun, it just goes straight and does a single instance of damage for each 1 point of ammo it does, the DoT can be implemented later

Stealth effectively, loot and distribute or hold onto resources efficiently, set up for fights effectively, land shots and get good value out of your weapons, and it's generally good to have and be able to construct gameplans for the levels.

Which can get you by most content, but it does mean you'll be prone to getting lost or wasting resources for no reason.
