hi, it seems sometime recently almost every PNG on my wiki was given a layer of JPEG compression?
what i've noticed;
- i know for a fact they did not have compression when i uploaded them. their file extension is still .png
- even when opening the original png uploaded to the wiki at full resolution in a new tab, it has compression
- some of my friends have reported not seeing compression on certain images, but this is inconsistent and varies between user
- this change is not reflected in the image edit history at all whatsoever
i'm very confused why this is happening; most of these images are only 901x557, so i can't imagine they take up much space, and this compression is happening to images as small as 149x149.
attached are two images from the wiki; one is taken from the internet archive (late 2025), the other is from today. these images have never been edited by me in any way
