hi, it seems sometime recently almost every PNG on my wiki was given a layer of JPEG compression?
what i've noticed;

  • i know for a fact they did not have compression when i uploaded them. their file extension is still .png
  • even when opening the original png uploaded to the wiki at full resolution in a new tab, it has compression
  • some of my friends have reported not seeing compression on certain images, but this is inconsistent and varies between user
  • this change is not reflected in the image edit history at all whatsoever

i'm very confused why this is happening; most of these images are only 901x557, so i can't imagine they take up much space, and this compression is happening to images as small as 149x149.

attached are two images from the wiki; one is taken from the internet archive (late 2025), the other is from today. these images have never been edited by me in any way

You're probably seeing webp compression artifacts. Not jpeg.

It is a known issue with Google Chrome which prefers webp responses over everything else.
