#Lost account access

@crimson light likely no unless you've followed our recovery without email steps. I assume you aren't currently logged in.
I logged out... Yes
Have you linked your Miraheze account to anything else you can access?
Did you have any private wikis only you could access?
Does anyone know you in real life?
Faith not
No
No
However, the username is identical to mine here on Discord
@crimson light I assume you've not done a committed identity then?
It's the same username isn't strong enough. Too easy to spoof.
Hmm, WikiMedia logs all IPs accessing the account, right?
@crimson light doesn't prove it's you
Could be a sibling / parent
Anyone in same network
But not on the same computer
IP isn't device unique
The standard for account recovery is fairly high to avoid social engineering
Not? Is the public IP of the router?
Yep, it's only unique to the router
So that doesn't help us identify you
We won't hand over an account without fairly convincing evidence that we're handing it to the right person.
Mac addresses are not registered?
Nope
Based on the evidence available at this time, I doubt it's possible
I've pinged someone on the right team but I'm not seeing anything we can verify
It has to be something unique to you
any contributions under that account?
@steep crest I don't see how public contributions would help
Hmm...
I've done the account recovery process a few times before
It's very frustrating because unless you've set up a recovery method, the answer is fairly often no.
We offer alternatives to email for those who don't want to give email or that can be done alongside
(I recommend 2)
just asked, would be easier to make new account 🤷
I've seen verification take months before
New account is better if you are new
Stewards might rename your old account if you ask nicely
And let you use the old username but without the history
You are a System-Administrator? You have root access?
Oh, that's probably why there's a "former" in the roll name?
Yes
Say, then there would be free places for others? The want to become system administrators?
There's no limit
And who would I have to turn to?
To become a Sysadmin? One of the engineering managers but you need experience
Unfortunately I can confirm that unless there's conclusive proof you can't recover the account
Experience especially within Miraheze itself of course, so you'd need to start by helping out as a volunteer first (GitHub, Phabricator, Discord, IRC, on-wiki, etc.)
did you think you had an email on the account? if so, you might be able to that email's app/dashboard, and search for emails from miraheze.
I already had! I had already applied for several password resets, but never received even one!
Then I remembered that I was too lazy to add one to my account...
As I mentioned before, unless you have a conclusive way to prove that the account is yours or email attached there's nothing we can do. As if we did someone could easily impersonate a user and gain access to their account.
Losing account details isn’t the best start on your way to becoming Sysadmin.
Just saying
Sysadmins can unlock their own accounts though
has unlocked his bot account before using Sysadmin powers
I geuss that falls under the "Does anyone know you in real life?" 😉
just make new account man
We could even probably rename it back to the old one in a few months time, so I wouldn't worry too much about it
