The quicker I can get a "yes users want this" green light the faster im down to implement.
Also <@&673384065327431700> would love feedback on this either here or in mod chat.
I still would leave it up to them because sometimes they don't want to discuss/debate their opinion they just want to let me know what it is, but if theyre willing im sure theyll put it here.
I think this is gonna suffer from sidebar clutter real quick. forums work great for #953393160464269402 or #953346021738565652 where threads will be closed soon, but if 5 people occasionally post screenshots from the map they're working on and I'm interested in seeing those, I don't want five extra channels in my sidebar
yeah I could see that
that also creates a clearer division between "asking for feedback" and "showing something off", which I know has sometimes been an issue
i'm not sure if merging literally everything is the best move, but channels with similar topics could have been changed into forums. My concern is that it'd be hard to browse what's what if we have one forum for general modding stuff
I haven't been a useful helper for a while, but the kinds of feedback that those channels need tends to be very different, and e.g. #map_making's higher traffic compared to #code_modding might make it less useful or feel less open to code modders
another thing is that a lot of these channels are not just showcases, but also just various conversations about certain topics. I'm concerned forums would remove the conversations about mapping or modding that happen in there
speaking of, maybe having forums in showcase channels wouldn't be a bad idea? i feel like that format would work quite well
I feel like #modding_wip might work better with a forum, but that already has a visibility issue, and the forum would make it worse, so that's probably not worth it
I'd say that's half the point of it though
Actually, I'd say it went the other way. Most of the first posts are people posting zips looking for feedback, and I rarely see that now
yeah there’s definitely way less .zips posted now
could be just a me thing but atm the channel feels very disjointed to the point of it feeling a bit purposeless
I personally would prefer a return to the original use, but that's maybe a topic for a different suggestion. I don't dislike what people use it for now, but if it's at the expense of the old purpose then it's a downgrade
I agree with Brokemia, I think posting maps for playtesting seems like a good purpose for the channel
agreed i think (not my cat so don’t feel the strongest) just as a bit of an outsider who uses it occasionally it’s hard to follow when it’s like
- people posting .zips/disc invites for playtesting
- collab/contest announcements
- video/image teasers for upcoming maps (not for feedback, just to tease it)
- video/images that are for feedback
probably some other stuff i’m not thinking of too
just personally ends up feeling very cluttery and hard to use at all so would prefer it’s split up in some fashion if possible (dunno what to do with the other stuff)
the last one should definitely just go into #map_making imo. I think an argument could be made for a separate channel to post announcements and trailers/teasers to keep #modding_wip for wip maps for playtesting, similar to the #tas_projects vs #tas_project_files distinction
in general im not really a huge fan of the forums, they are extremely tedious to navigate and keep up with, and i feel the only benefit from them is people not getting confused by who is targeted in a conversation
i used to read about every single message in the modding category, and recently i have just skipped over modding_help because its that much of a chore to even look at
i dont think a forum style fits at all for coding channel at least, one of the recent examples is creating about 3-5 threads for simple questions that could be solved in about 10 messages total in a traditional text channel
thats what happened in modding_help
