#Error while installing everest
55 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
there was another log, but it was empty, literally nothing is written within it
and was causing that error so, it was not included
System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'MonoMod.MonoModRules' threw an exception.
---> System.Exception: This version of Celeste is already modded. You need a clean install of Celeste to mod it.
the only reasonable cause for this is that the vanilla copy in orig is not actually vanilla
is there a MMHOOK_Celeste.dll in orig
what is orig? is that a file? (sorry im slow)
orig is where a vanilla copy of the game is backed up to before installing everest
it's in celeste's game files
it's a folder
how do i get to celeste's folders
...is celeste not here 💀 i just installed it i swear
no, it is
i'm saying that the vanilla copy in orig which you're restoring is not actually vanilla, but everest
which is why it's saying "hey you gave me a modded copy of celeste"
right click celeste > properties > installed files > browse
then open the folder named orig and tell me whether MMHOOK_Celeste.dll is there
yeah just double checked and tried searching, there is no MMHOOK_Celeste.dll
the folder names?
theres like mono cecil
net corifier
nvm i can take a screenshot
okay yeah this copy has definitely been modded
do i delete and reinstall celeste?
so basically verify game files, delete the orig folder and reinstall everest

If you have Everest installed, you will need to reinstall it after verifying.
oh okay
okay i verified game files (smth went wrong with 6 files and idk what steam did with them)
deleted the orig file
currently downloading everest
hey it worked
the fact 6 files failed to validate is normal
everest injects itself into celeste to make it work
doing so changes the contents of the executable, which makes it no longer vanilla
verifying game files checks whether the files on your computer are exactly the same on steam's servers
and since the files you get when you install celeste do not have everest, steam thinks the files failed validation (despite them still being "fine")
verifying game files is basically just "are my game files identical compared to what steam got?"
you're the first person thats nice enough to explain the problem and the solution, rather than saying "just do as i say and the game will work" 🥹 ty
the game is working just fine now
much appreciated
yea, i just wanted to explain
since it's something else when you wonder "ok but what does this actually do"
yeaaaah
and something else when you actually understand what you're doing
since you can see that i kinda know what im talking about
if only all customer support agents were like you
well ty! is there a way i can close this now
oh i just marked it as resolved anyway
