so i was trying to fix a 10 fps issue where my game was consistently at 10 fps. im not gonna blather on more about some issues here but all you need to know is that my game for some reason deleted a file i needed to run the game. i tried a multitude of ways to get this file but none worked, until about 3 hours later when i remembered i could verify game files. i got the file back but everest was now removed. so i reinstalled it and whenever i boot up the game it either:

a) crashes on loading screen

b) loading screen never ends (im serious i waited half an hour and nothing happened)

i tried changing the beta but it said ‘content file locked’. i tried verifying game files again but now it says ‘content file locked’. now when i open the game it consistently crashes on startup bc of a completely new error to the 17 hundred different ones ive been receiving. ive tried to uninstall everest manually but it didnt work. ive tried literally EVERYTHING POSSIBLE FOR SEVEN HOURS but nothing works. if anyone has an answer/fix to my oddly specific question that would be GREATLY appreciated i just wanna play celeste again

assuming you're on steam ('cause you said you were verifying integrity,) backup your saves (depends on what OS you use) and then uninstall/reinstall celeste outright

you may need to just straight up delete the celeste folder from the <steaminstall>/steamapps/common/Celeste directory if the steam uninstaller doesn't work

the saves should just be in the celeste folder under Celeste/Saves
the settings files apply to all save files, and it counts from 0 so the first save slot is going to be 0.celeste and all of its mod saves

the second will be 1.celeste

#

and yes you can just copy them all out and back in later and it will work

mine have gone through three separate instances of windows, probably 3 separate linux distros, and a mac for a short time

it is very hard to damage your saves in this process

probably a permission issue? close steam (go to task manager and exit all the tasks) and then reopen it as administrator

i suspect the game never loading was because of the same permission issue where it would fail to access any assets because Celeste didn't have the permissions to do so

we entirely wiped olympus' memory of Everest ever being installed so it actually installs right, and got rid of Everest so olympus could add stuff with no permission issues

that's mod saves but I've built up a pretty beefy collection of mod saves through my time in Celeste and if each one of those reinstalled every time that would be a nightmare
