try removing all of the blank space before your dialog lines

THAT WAS THE ISSUE
the game wasn't getting the position of the box
so it was placing on the middle
the reason is that the code thinks "direction" means two different things, so puts the portrait on one side but the space for the portait to go in on the other side
also about custom NPCS
it asks for sprites
do i need the folder sprites inside of "Gameplay"??
if your image is in Graphics/Atlases/Gameplay/characters/YourName/ModName/image_name.png, put YourName/ModName/image_name

that's in metadata i think, it's the 'inventory' setting
if that doesn't work for you, i think extended variant mode has a trigger you can use

Yeah, you need a Portraits.xml, you can take example on the vanilla one in Content/Graphics
@rancid igloo there's a page on the wiki that shows how the xml should be set up

Have you beaten the map on that save file yet? I suspect that could help. Although it should still show deaths
