Yeh well they do spawn in certain spots, so you gotta know where to look, but it’s stupid they won’t start spawning till yonks after you get there. Unless you’re lucky and find one when you get there (usually cause of the timing, or there’s multiple people in the area)

My experience as Cera was: run around and die to a bigger Dino when still a baby, and again, then make it to a slightly bigger kid but nearly starve to death so have to kill and eat the only other creature I finally found which was a smaller Cera, then after I ate them another Cera my size came and killed me and then I went back to the same spot as another Cera and we both ate my corpse and found out they were the smaller Cera from before that I'd eaten. The circle of life...
That makes sense, the deer I've seen on my herbis are still skittish to them, so they must be a lot more so to predators

Yes, you can get it as 2nd mutation slot only. From my canni experience, it is incredibly hard to get as a carno before the nutrition update. Unsure how hard it is currently

From what I've seen the most reliable AI spawns are northwest ridge. The path from the human base to water access has plenty of goats and tacos and the small pond near northwest ridge always have pig spawns going down towards the coast.
and least reliable is river delta and highlands because they get stuck inside rocks or spawn on cliffs where you can't reach
