There is something called a "shadow" or some call it "desynced hitbox"
When you run, your shadow is a tiny bit behind you and desync can make is so that the one running for you is within reach, while youre game is without reach.

Its s syncronization issue.

The kill might have been legit in his version of events

I lost a stego that way - in my game the cera never really hit. But because we both were sprinting (and the massive hitbox of a stego) he was able to repeatedly hit my tail again and again while i couldnt reach him.
