So they make Loki out to be a giant selfish dick the entire film/show series, right? They give him a pretty serious neurological disorder early on (Narcissism, yes that's a real brain disease) in his appearances dating all the way back through the Marvel films. Every movie they hammer on it and the writing backs it up - he's repeatedly self serving, has god complexes, and a constant "little man syndrome" trying to fuel his own means to make the world fit more like his internal views.

This is a good thing.

In the Loki show, that writing to support the idea doesn't exist. He's repeatedly self-sacrificing, beaten down repeatedly for a laugh to admit something measurably untrue based on the prior films, and even in the end passes off his own mantle to a totally original character that's written, built, and is serviced just as he was in the prior films. This is explained away as a revelation internally with him... BUT YOU CAN'T JUST HAVE A CHANGE OF HEART OR REVELATION WITH A NEUROLOGICAL DISORDER.

They took the character then glanced at his wikipedia entry and said "Yeah, we got it" and did none of the actual footwork to make the script work for the show.
