You know I always found it astonishing how the continental US is only slightly larger than Australia but Australias population is less than 26 million and the US’ is over 330 million.

“The consensus among human geneticists is that, at present, the human race is genetically degenerating due to rapid mutation accumulation and relaxed natural selection pressure (Crow, 1997; Lynch, 2010). These geneticists realize that there is presently a continuous accumulation of mutations in the human population and that this is occurring at a much higher rate than was previously thought possible. Geneticists widely agree that these mutations are almost entirely either neutral or deleterious (if any are beneficial, they are considered so rare as to be excluded from consideration).”

First Animal species of the day (98) :
Whale Shark / (Rhincodon typus)

#

The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is a slow-moving, filter-feeding carpet shark and the largest known extant fish species. The largest confirmed individual had a length of 18.8 m (61.7 ft).[8] The whale shark holds many records for size in the animal kingdom, most notably being by far the largest living nonmammalian vertebrate. It is the sole member of the genus Rhincodon and the only extant member of the family Rhincodontidae, which belongs to the subclass Elasmobranchii in the class Chondrichthyes. Before 1984 it was classified as Rhiniodon into Rhinodontidae.

#

Range :

#

The whale shark is found in open waters of the tropical oceans and is rarely found in water below 21 °C (70 °F).[2] Studies looking at vertebral growth bands and the growth rates of free-swimming sharks have estimated whale shark lifespans at 80–130 years.[9][10][11] Whale sharks have very large mouths and are filter feeders, which is a feeding mode that occurs in only two other sharks, the megamouth shark and the basking shark. They feed almost exclusively on plankton and small fishes and pose no threat to humans.

#

Whale sharks possess a broad, flattened head with a large mouth and two small eyes located at the front corners.[14][15] Unlike many other sharks, whale shark mouths are located at the front of the head rather than on the underside of the head.[16] A 12.1 m (39.7 ft) whale shark was reported to have a mouth 1.55 m (5.1 ft) across.[17] Whale shark mouths can contain over 300 rows of tiny teeth and 20 filter pads which it uses to filter feed.[18] The spiracles are located just behind the eyes. Whale sharks have five large pairs of gills. Their skin is dark grey with a white belly marked with an arrangement of pale grey or white spots and stripes that is unique to each individual. The skin can be up to 15 cm (5.9 in) thick and is very hard and rough to the touch. The whale shark has three prominent ridges along its sides, which start above and behind the head and end at the caudal peduncle.[15] The shark has two dorsal fins set relatively far back on the body, a pair of pectoral fins, a pair of pelvic fins and a single medial anal fin. The caudal fin has a larger upper lobe than the lower lobe (heterocercal).

#

The whale shark inhabits all tropical and warm-temperate seas. The fish is primarily pelagic, and can be found in both coastal and oceanic habitats.[45] Tracking devices have shown that the whale shark displays dynamic patterns of habitat utilization, likely in response to availability of prey. Whale sharks observed off the northeast Yucatan Peninsula tend to engage in inshore surface swimming between sunrise and mid-afternoon, followed by regular vertical oscillations in oceanic waters during the afternoon and overnight. About 95% of the oscillating period was spent in epipelagic depths (<200 metres (660 ft)), but whale sharks also took regular deep dives (>500 metres (1,600 ft)), often descending in brief "stutter steps", perhaps for foraging. The deepest recorded dive was 1,928 metres (6,325 ft), making the whale shark the deepest diving fish to be recorded. Whale sharks were also observed to remain continuously at depths of greater than 50 metres (160 ft) for three days or more.

#

The whale shark is a filter feeder – one of only three known filter-feeding shark species (along with the basking shark and the megamouth shark). 🦈🦈🦈

#

feeds on plankton including copepods, krill, fish eggs, Christmas Island red crab larvae [62] and small nektonic life, such as small squid or fish. It also feeds on clouds of eggs during mass spawning of fish and corals.

they would have an alot harder life in the wild

Most seals in rehab are only there because humans

azure oar
#

It’s of course good that they are beeing rehabbed but it could be easily avoided

azure oar
drowsy egret
#

its good for them that we are keeping them alive basically
but its bad for the ecosystem

azure oar
#

Many if not all rehab stations only pick up animals hurt by humans/human stuff

drowsy egret
#

then again humans are forgetting what nature is so
wont be surprised if we find a way to rehab sharks

drowsy egret
#

imo we should just go and remove what caused it to be injured in the first place
you cant save them unless you remove what caused it
which is mostly trash in the water

Second Animal species of the day (99) :
Eurasian magpie / (Pica pica)

#

The Eurasian magpie or common magpie (Pica pica) is a resident breeding bird throughout the northern part of the Eurasian continent. It is one of several birds in the crow family (corvids) designated magpies, and belongs to the Holarctic radiation of "monochrome" magpies. In Europe, "magpie" is used by English speakers as a synonym for the Eurasian magpie: the only other magpie in Europe is the Iberian magpie (Cyanopica cooki), which is limited to the Iberian Peninsula.

#

Range :

#

The Eurasian magpie is one of the most intelligent birds, and it is believed to be one of the most intelligent of all non-human animals.[2] The expansion of its nidopallium is approximately the same in its relative size as the brain of chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and humans.[3] It is the only bird known to pass the mirror test, along with very few other non-avian species.

#

The adult male of the nominate subspecies, P. p. pica, is 44–46 cm (17–18 in) in length, of which more than half is the tail. The wingspan is 52–62 cm (20–24 in).[18] The head, neck and breast are glossy black with a metallic green and violet sheen; the belly and scapulars (shoulder feathers) are pure white; the wings are black glossed with green or purple, and the primaries have white inner webs, conspicuous when the wing is open. The graduated tail is black, glossed with green and reddish purple. The legs and bill are black; the iris is dark brown.[19] The plumage of the sexes is similar but females are slightly smaller. The tail feathers of both sexes are quite long, about 12–28 cm long. Males of the nominate subspecies weigh 210–272 g (7.4–9.6 oz) while females weigh 182–214 g (6.4–7.5 oz). The young resemble the adults, but are at first without much of the gloss on the sooty plumage. The young have the malar region pink, and somewhat clear eyes. The tail is much shorter than the adults.

#

Eurasian magpies have a well-known call. It is a choking chatter "chac-chac" or a repetitive "chac-chac-chac-chac". The young also emit the previous call, although they also emit an acute call similar to a "Uik Uik", which may resemble the barking of a small dog. Both adults and young can emit a kind of hiss barely noticeable from afar.

#

Flying mode :

#

The range of the magpie extends across temperate Eurasia from Portugal, Spain and Ireland in the west to the Kamchatka Peninsula.[19]

The preferred habit is open countryside with scattered trees and magpies are normally absent from treeless areas and dense forests.[19] They sometimes breed at high densities in suburban settings such as parks and gardens.[21][22] They can often be found close to the centre of cities.[23]

Magpies are normally sedentary and spend winters close to their nesting territories but birds living near the northern limit of their range in Sweden, Finland and Russia can move south in harsh weather.

Third Animal species of the day (100) :
Baikal seal / (Pusa sibirica)

#

The Baikal seal, Lake Baikal seal or nerpa (Pusa sibirica), is a species of earless seal endemic to Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia. Like the Caspian seal, it is related to the Arctic ringed seal. The Baikal seal is one of the smallest true seals and the only exclusively freshwater pinniped species.[2] A subpopulation of inland harbour seals living in the Hudson Bay region of Quebec, Canada (Lacs des Loups Marins harbour seals), as well as the Saimaa ringed seal and the Ladoga seal (both ringed seal subspecies), are also found in fresh water, but these seals are part of species that also have marine populations.

#

Range :

#

The most recent population estimates are 80,000 to 100,000 animals, roughly equaling the expected carrying capacity of the lake.[1] At present, the species is not considered threatened.

#

The Baikal seal is one of the smallest true seals. Adults typically grow to 1.1–1.4 m (3 ft 7 in – 4 ft 7 in) in length[1] with a body mass from 63 to 70 kg (139 to 154 lb).[3] The maximum reported size is 1.65 m (5 ft 5 in) in length and 130 kg (290 lb) in weight.[4] There are significant annual variations in the weight, with lowest weight in the spring and highest weight, about 38–42% more, in the fall.[5] The animals show very little sexual dimorphism; males are only slightly larger than females.[3] They have a uniform, steely-grey coat on their backs and fur with a yellowish tinge on their abdomens. As the coat weathers, it becomes brownish.[5] When born, the pups weigh 3–3.5 kg (6.6–7.7 lb) and are about 70 cm (2 ft 4 in) long.[1] They have coats of white, silky, natal fur. This fur is quickly shed and exchanged for a darker coat, much like that of adults. Rarely, Baikal seals can be found with spotted coats.

#

Adult and a juvenile

#

The Baikal seal lives only in the waters of Lake Baikal.[6] It is something of a mystery how Baikal seals came to live there in the first place. The skull structure of the Baikal seal suggests it is closely related to the Caspian seal. In addition, the morphological structures in both species suggest they are descended from Arctic ringed seals.[7] They may have swum up rivers and streams or possibly Lake Baikal was linked to the ocean at some point through a large body of water, such as the Tethys Ocean, West Siberian Glacial Lake or West Siberian Plain, formed in a previous ice age. The seals are estimated to have inhabited Lake Baikal for some two million years.

#

Female Baikal seals reach sexual maturity at 3–6 years of age, whereas males achieve it around 4–7 years.[3] The males and females are not strongly sexually dimorphic. Baikal seals mate in the water towards the end of the pupping season. With a combination of delayed implantation and a nine-month gestation period, the Baikal seals' overall pregnancy is around 11 months. Pregnant females are the only Baikal seals to haul out during the winter. The males tend to stay in the water, under the ice, all winter. Females usually give birth to one pup, but they are one of only two species of true seals with the ability to give birth to twins.[5] Very rarely, triplets or quadruplets have been recorded.[4] The twins often stick together for some time after being weaned. The females, after giving birth to their pups on the ice in late winter, become immediately impregnated again, and often are lactating while pregnant.

Just finished Oppenheimer and tbh I prefer Barbie

#

Oppenheimer was still super good

toxic ledge
barren bear
#

Barbie was ok

#

I won't talk about the politics of the film, as I disagree with how the film was treated

#

but, personally, Barbie was a bit overhyped.
Wish it was a kids movie

#

and not another rich/bourgeoisie millennial dream from people with zero to little life experience about the world around them

#

compare Barbie to Lego Movie.
Both having the same premise- fantasy land (lego world and Barbieland) and reality intertwining somehow
in which the main character comes down, by the finale, to some nice/sweet moral conclusion

#

I just wish Barbie, the movie, played less on the trope of equity and more on just fair, unbiased, equality

#

Barbieland becoming renamed.
Would've been nice and sweet

#

Even then. The use of explicit language and more vulgar themes; Just wish it stayed in it the zone of a family/kids movie

#

But yeah, being an adult, Barbie was still fun and very vivid with it's use of colour

#

But, in my opinion, Oppenheimer beats Barbie.
Oppenheimer was a bit slow on the final act.
But I'm far more used to longer films- coming from the theatre industry, where plays are usually quite long.
And I have grown up to older films too, which were much longer. Aka. Lawrence of Arabia

#

but it was far more exciting, in respect to both their respective genres and to the people they were aiming at in marketing.

First Animal species of the day (101) :
Green Sea turtle / (Chelonia mydas)

#

The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), also known as the green turtle, black (sea) turtle or Pacific green turtle,[4] is a species of large sea turtle of the family Cheloniidae. It is the only species in the genus Chelonia.[5] Its range extends throughout tropical and subtropical seas around the world, with two distinct populations in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, but it is also found in the Indian Ocean.[6][7] The common name refers to the usually green fat found beneath its carapace, not to the color of its carapace, which is olive to black.

#

Range :

#

The dorsoventrally flattened body of C. mydas is covered by a large, teardrop-shaped carapace; it has a pair of large, paddle-like flippers. It is usually lightly colored, although in the eastern Pacific populations, parts of the carapace can be almost black. Unlike other members of its family, such as the hawksbill sea turtle, C. mydas is mostly herbivorous. The adults usually inhabit shallow lagoons, feeding mostly on various species of seagrasses.[8] The turtles bite off the tips of the blades of seagrass, which keeps the grass healthy.

#

Like other sea turtles, green sea turtles migrate long distances between feeding grounds and hatching beaches. Many islands worldwide are known as Turtle Island due to green sea turtles nesting on their beaches. Females crawl out on beaches, dig nests, and lay eggs during the night. Later, hatchlings emerge, and scramble into the water. Those that reach maturity may live to 90 years in the wild. 💀⏰

#

Its appearance is that of a typical sea turtle. C. mydas has a dorsoventrally flattened body, a beaked head at the end of a short neck, and paddle-like arms well-adapted for swimming.[24] Adult green turtles grow to 1.5 metres (5 ft) long.[25] The average weight of mature individuals is 68–190 kg (150–419 lb) and the average carapace length is 78–112 cm (31–44 in).[26] Exceptional specimens can weigh 315 kg (694 lb) or even more, with the largest known C. mydas having weighed 395 kg (871 lb) and measured 153 cm (60 in) in carapace length.

#

Green sea turtles move across three habitat types, depending on their life stage. They lay eggs on beaches. Mature turtles spend most of their time in shallow, coastal waters with lush seagrass beds. Adults frequent inshore bays, lagoons, and shoals with lush seagrass meadows. Entire generations often migrate between one pair of feeding and nesting areas.[24] Green sea turtles, Chelonia mydas, are classified as an aquatic species and are distributed around the globe in warm tropical to subtropical waters. The environmental parameter that limits the distribution of the turtles is ocean temperatures below 7 to 10 degrees Celsius.[60] Within their geographical range, the green sea turtles generally stay near continental and island coastlines. Near the coastlines, the green sea turtles live within shallow bays and protected shores. In these protected shores and bays, the green sea turtle habitats include coral reefs, salt marshes, and nearshore seagrass beds. The coral reefs provide red, brown, and green algae for their diet and give protection from predators and rough storms within the ocean. The salt marshes and seagrass beds contain seaweed and grass vegetation, allowing ample habitat for the sea turtles.

Second Animal species of the day (102) :
Killer whale / (Orcinus orca)

#

The orca (Orcinus orca), also called killer whale, is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family, of which it is the largest member. It is the only extant species in the genus Orcinus and is recognizable by its black-and-white patterned body. A cosmopolitan species, orcas can be found in all of the world's oceans in a variety of marine environments, from Arctic and Antarctic regions to tropical seas.

#

Orcas are apex predators and have a diverse diet. Individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey. This includes a variety of fish, sharks, rays, and marine mammals such as seals, other species of dolphin, and whales. They are highly social; some populations are composed of highly stable matrilineal family groups (pods). Their sophisticated hunting techniques and vocal behaviors, which are often specific to a particular group and passed across generations, have been described as manifestations of animal culture.

#

Orcas are commonly referred to as "killer whales", although as part of the family Delphinidae, the species is more closely related to other oceanic dolphins than to other whales.[6][7] Since the 1960s, the use of "orca" instead of "killer whale" has steadily grown in common use.[8]

They are sometimes referred to as "blackfish", a name also used for other whale species. "Grampus" is a former name for the species, but is now seldom used. This meaning of "grampus" should not be confused with the genus Grampus, whose only member is Risso's dolphin.

#

Orcas are the largest extant members of the dolphin family. Males typically range from 6 to 8 metres (20 to 26 ft) long and weigh in excess of 6 tonnes (5.9 long tons; 6.6 short tons). However, the largest recorded specimen measured 9.8 metres (32 ft) and weighed more than 10 tonnes (9.8 long tons; 11 short tons).[29] Females are smaller, generally ranging from 5 to 7 m (16 to 23 ft) and weighing about 3 to 4 tonnes (3.0 to 3.9 long tons; 3.3 to 4.4 short tons).[30] Calves at birth weigh about 180 kg (400 lb) and are about 2.4 m (7.9 ft) long.[31][32] The skeleton of the orca is typical for an oceanic dolphin, but more robust.

#

Orcas are notable for their complex societies. Only elephants and higher primates live in comparably complex social structures.[103] Due to orcas' complex social bonds, many marine experts have concerns about how humane it is to keep them in captivity.

I am moving to the off topic section to talk about 'africa being hard mode.'

I'm not an expert on this so take everything I say with a grain of salt and I'm not a source for anything.

And I haven't read a lot about dinos so I am making no attempt to apply this to dinos right now.

But I have read about some stuff after the dinos, just a bit, and in a discussion someone mentioned how Africa was 'hard mode.' And yeah, Africa has a lot of unique animals, and megafauna (really big animals), I'm pretty sure it has more modern/still alive and not extinct megafauna than any other place does right now... Wild and not in a zoo of course.

#

From what I read, there was some kind of mass extinction that happened near the end of the last ice age? I think? I'm blurry on those details, but it hit the Americas harder than it hit Africa, I think from what I read Africa was affected by that extinction the least. Again don't count on me being right about this part.

So, well, you all probably know this, but when a position opens up in an ecosystem, something tries to fill that position. It may take a long time for something to, sometimes effectively 'evolve' to fill the spot, and it's part of why islands have such interesting animals sometimes. It's interesting to see because they still have 'large grazer,' 'small grazer,' 'carnivore,' and even 'top predator' but in environments of isolation very different creatures take those spots...

#

Moa birds in New Zealand, Zebras in Africa, Kangaroos in Australia, deer of various kinds in the temperate forests of the world, their positions are not identical but quite similar still. A large herbivore taken down by, usually, some form of large or large-ish carnivore.

#

But it takes time to get there... Evolution takes a whole lot of time.

I like to take gazelle and cheetah for an example. Cheetahs have to be fast enough to catch and kill their prey, or they'd starve and die out. Makes sense, right? The prey, the slowest or whoevere the cheetah ambushes, the weak of the herd, they get eaten. But if you keep taking out the weak, and the strong (or for a gazelle, 'the fast') are the ones that bear offspring, then... Those offspring are gonna be speedy, and gazelles are slowly gonna get faster.
Which in turn will force cheetahs to slowly get faster too, because those who weren't won't survive or, at the very least, won't eat as much and might be less desirable mates or have less food to feed their offspring and therein have less offspring than a cheetah who was faster.

This is a bit of an exaggeration as there are other factors involved as well, more than JUST cheetahs eat gazelles after all for one thing...

#

So we have gazelles and cheetahs, theorectically forever 'sharpening' each other for fastness - But if a mass extinction happens and both of them and everyone else gets wiped out except for some mice and small critters... Well then you start from scratch and evolution has to sharpen creatures against each other again (takes a long time) for them to reach 'hard core mode' where everyone is getting 'really sharp'.

I think, Africa looks like 'hard core mode,' or very 'sharp' in it's ecosystem because it hasn't been as affected by a mass extinction for a while. And, I'm not SURE but, perhaps that's why some animals get so big too - The same reason why gazelles and cheetahs are both fast... Prey wanted to get big to get strong, and predator had to get big too so it wouldn't starve out... Of course they cannot become infinitely big or infinitely fast because of gravity and other physical issues but I think this plays a roll in why some dinosaurs had such crazy looking adaptions - Same for some cool african animals! Giraffes are super unique and there's nothing quite like the giraffe that isn't extinct.

#

Okay that more or less finishes my rambling.

First Animal species of the day (103) :
Reticulated giraffe / (Giraffa reticulata)

#

The reticulated giraffe (Giraffa reticulata[3] or Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) is a species of giraffe native to the Horn of Africa. It lives in Somalia, southern Ethiopia, and northern Kenya.[4] There are approximately 8,500 individuals living in the wild.

#

Range in red ❤️ the other are the different species 💚💛💙

#

Reticulated giraffes historically occurred widely throughout Northeast Africa. Their favored habitats are savannas, woodlands, seasonal floodplains, and rainforests.

#

Reticulated giraffes are diel meaning they are active during the day and the night. They are most active during the early and late parts of the day due to their warmer environment. Their sleep patterns are usually short, consisting of no more than a couple hours at a time typically standing up. The home range of a G. reticulata is nonexclusive and usually overlapping with other individuals or groups. These home ranges include both males and females and vary in size depending on food resources, gender, and water availability. There is no evidence of territorial behavior between G. reticulata.

#

The Reticulated giraffe is a herbivore feeding on leaves, shoots, and shrubs. They spend most of their day feeding, roughly 13 hours/day. They are ruminant mammals, also known as hindgut fermentation, which complements their high fiber diet. The only competition for food resources G. reticulata encounters is elephants (Proboscidea).

#

Pattern to easily distinguish it compared to the other species

#

Females display reproductive receptivity by emitting odor from their vaginal area and hindparts. The estrous cycle of a female is about 15 days. A male can enhance this scent by curling it's lip which assists in bringing the odor to the vomeronasal organ of the giraffe. Dominant males will guard estrus females from other competing males. When the male is ready to breed, he notifies the female by tapping the female's hindleg with his foreleg or by resting his head on the females back. Post-reproduction there is no long term bond between males and females. The gestation period of G. reticulata is on average 445-457 days, producing one offspring. The occasion of producing two offspring is rare but documented. The female will give birth standing up, and the offspring will stand up anywhere between 5-20 minutes post-birth. Weaning age of the young varies anywhere between 6-17 months, and independence occurs at 2 years old.

Second Animal species of the day (104) :
Masai giraffe / (Giraffa tippelskirchi)

#

The Masai giraffe (Giraffa tippelskirchh Giraffa also spelled Maasai giraffe, and sometimes called the Kilimanjaro giraffe, is a species of giraffe. It is native to East Africa. The Masai giraffe can be found in central and southern Kenya and in Tanzania. It has distinctive jagged, irregular leaf-like blotches that extend from the hooves to its head. The Masai giraffe is currently the national animal of Tanzania.

#

Range in yellow 💛the other are the different species 💚❤️💙

#

The Masai giraffe is distinguished by jagged and irregular spots on its body. Its geographic range includes various parts of eastern Africa.[7][8][9] It is the largest-bodied giraffe species, making it the tallest land animal on Earth.[7] Bulls are generally larger and heavier than cows, weighing close to 1,300 kilograms (2,900 pounds) and growing up to 5.5 meters (18 feet) in height. In the wild, individuals can live to be around 30 years of age, and in most cases can live longer in captivity.[10] The Masai giraffe's most famous feature, its neck, contains seven vertebrae and makes up roughly one third of its body height. Its long and muscular tongue, which can be up to 50 centimeters (20 inches) in length, is prehensile and allows it to grab leaves from tall trees that are inaccessible to other animals. The tongue's darker pigment is believed to function as a natural sunscreen and prevent sunburn. On top of the head are two bony structures called ossicones which are covered by thick skin and have dark hair on the tips. These can be used during fights to club its opponent. Bulls usually have an extra ossicone present between the eyes.[11] When galloping, the Masai giraffe has been recorded to reach speeds of almost 64 kilometers per hour (40 miles per hour).

#

Masai giraffes are considered endangered by the IUCN,[1] and the Masai giraffe population declined 52% in recent decades due to poaching and habitat loss. The population amounts to 32,550 in the wild. Demographic studies of wild giraffes living inside and outside protected areas suggest low adult survival outside protected areas due to poaching and low calf survival inside protected areas due to predation; these are the primary influences on population growth rates.[12][13] Survival of giraffe calves is influenced by the season of birth[14] and the seasonal local presence or absence of long-distance migratory herds of wildebeest and zebra.[15] Metapopulation analysis indicated protected areas were important for keeping giraffes in the larger landscape.

#

Pattern to easily distinguish it compared to the other species

#

Masai giraffes can suffer from giraffe skin disease, which is a disorder of unknown etiology that causes lesion on the forelimbs. This disorder is being further investigated to better understand mortality in this species.

First Animal species of the day (105) :
Mandrill / (Mandrillus sphinx)

#

The mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) is a large Old World monkey native to west central Africa. It is one of the most colorful mammals in the world, with red and blue skin on its face and posterior. The species is sexually dimorphic, as males have a larger body, longer canine teeth and brighter coloring. It is the largest monkey in the world. Its closest living relative is the drill with which it shares the genus Mandrillus. Both species were traditionally thought to be baboons, but further evidence has shown that they are more closely related to white-eyelid mangabeys.

Mandrills mainly live in tropical rainforests but will also travel across savannas. They are active during the day and spend most of their time on the ground. Their preferred foods are fruit and seeds, but mandrills will consume leaves, piths, mushrooms, and animals from insects to juvenile antelope. Mandrills live in large, stable groups known as "hordes" which can number in the hundreds. Females form the core of these groups, while adult males are solitary and only reunite with the larger groups during the breeding season. Dominant males have the most vibrant colors and fattest flanks and rumps, and have the most success siring young.

The mandrill is classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Its biggest threats are habitat destruction and hunting for bushmeat. Gabon is considered the stronghold for the species. Its habitat has declined in Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, while its range in the Republic of the Congo is limited.

#

The mandrill has a stocky body with a large head and muzzle, as well as a short and stumpy tail.[19] The limbs are evenly sized and the fingers and toes are more elongated than those in baboons,[20] with a more opposable big toe on the feet.[21] The mandrill is the most sexually dimorphic primate,[22] and it is the largest monkey.[23] Females are less stocky and have shorter, flatter snouts.[19] Males have a 70–95 cm (28–37 in) head-body length and weigh 19–30 kg (42–66 lb) while females have a 55–70 cm (22–28 in) head-body length and weigh 10–15 kg (22–33 lb).[24] Most of the teeth are larger in males[25] and the canine teeth reach up to 4.5 cm (1.8 in) and 1 cm (0.39 in) long for males and females respectively.[22] Both sexes have 7–10 cm (2.8–3.9 in) long tails.

#

The coat of the mandrill is primarily grizzled or banded olive-brown with a yellow-orange beard and sparse, light hairs on its underside.[19][24] The lips are surrounded by stiff white whiskers, and white bare skin exists behind the ears. Male mandrills have a "crest" of long hairs on the head and neck, while both sexes have chest glands which are covered by long hairs. The face, rump and genitals have less hair.

#

Mandrills are mostly diurnal and are awake around 10 hours per day from morning to dusk.[38][47] They often pick a new tree to sleep in every night.[38] Mandrills have been observed using tools; in captivity, they use sticks to clean themselves.[48] In the wild, mandrills appear to live 12–14 years, but captive individuals can live 30–40 years.

Second Animal species of the day (106) :
Giant Pacific octopus / (Enteroctopus dofleini)

#

The giant Pacific octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini), also known as the North Pacific giant octopus, is a large marine cephalopod belonging to the genus Enteroctopus. Its spatial distribution includes the coastal North Pacific, along Mexico (Baja California), The United States (California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska), Canada (British Columbia), Russia, Eastern China, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula.[3] It can be found from the intertidal zone down to 2,000 m (6,600 ft), and is best adapted to cold, oxygen-rich water. It is arguably the largest octopus species.

#

Range :

#

E. dofleini is distinguished from other species by its large size. Adults usually weigh around 15 kg (33 lb), with an arm span up to 4.3 m (14 ft).[8] The larger individuals have been measured at 50 kg (110 lb) and have a radial span of 6 m (20 ft).[3] American zoologist G. H. Parker found that the largest suckers on a giant Pacific octopus are about 6.4 cm (2.5 in) and can support 16 kg (35 lb) each.[3] The alternative contender for the largest species of octopus is the seven-arm octopus (Haliphron atlanticus) based on a 61-kilogram (134-pound) incomplete carcass estimated to have a live mass of 75 kg (165 lb).

#

It has big suckers

#

Diet
E. dofleini preys upon shrimp, crabs, scallop, abalone, cockles, snails, clams, lobsters, fish, squid, and other octopuses.[11][12][13] Food is procured with its suckers and then bitten using its tough beak of chitin. It has also been observed to catch spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) up to 1.2 m (4 ft) in length while in captivity.[14] Additionally, consumed carcasses of this same shark species have been found in giant Pacific octopus middens in the wild, providing strong evidence of these octopuses preying on small sharks in their natural habitat.[15] In May 2012, amateur photographer Ginger Morneau was widely reported to have photographed a wild giant Pacific octopus attacking and drowning a seagull, demonstrating that this species is not above eating any available source of food within its size range, even birds.

I agree

#

Predators
Scavengers and other organisms often attempt to eat octopus eggs, even when the female is present to protect them. Giant Pacific octopus paralarvae are preyed upon by many other zooplankton and filter feeders. Marine mammals, such as harbor seals, sea otters, and sperm whales depend upon the giant Pacific octopus as a source of food. Pacific sleeper sharks are also confirmed predators of this species.[17] In addition, the octopus (along with cuttlefish and squid) is a significant source of protein for human consumption. About 3.3 million tonnes (3.6 million short tons) are commercially fished, worth $6 billion annually.[3] Over thousands of years, humans have caught them using lures, spears, pot traps, nets, and bare hands.[18] The octopus is parasitized by the mesozoan Dicyemodeca anthinocephalum [nl], which lives in its renal appendages.

First Animal species of the day (107) :
King of Saxony bird-of-paradise
/ (Pteridophora alberti)

#

The King of Saxony bird-of-paradise (Pteridophora alberti) is a bird in the bird-of-paradise family (Paradisaeidae). It is the only member of the genus Pteridophora. It is endemic to montane forest in New Guinea.

#

Range :

#

The adult King of Saxony bird-of-paradise is approximately 22 cm long. The male is black and yellow with a dark brown iris, brownish-grey legs, a black bill with a bright aqua-green gape, and two remarkably long (up to 50 cm) scalloped, enamel-blue brow-plumes that can be independently erected at the bird's will.[3] The unadorned female is greyish brown with barred underparts.

The male's ornamental head plumes are so bizarre that, when the first specimen was brought to Europe, it was thought to be a fake.

#

The King of Saxony bird-of-paradise inhabits the montane forests of New Guinea, and is distributed from the Weyland Mountains in Western New Guinea to the Kratke Range and Mount Giluwe in Papua New Guinea between 1,300–2,850 meters above mean sea level, but usually between 1,800–2,500 meters above sea level.

Moulted head-plumes in good condition are sought by male Archbold's bowerbirds for use as decorations, and in turn collected from the courtship bowers by humans. Males are also hunted for their highly prized long plumes used by natives for ceremonial decoration, but despite this the species remains fairly common in parts of its range. It is considered to be of least concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is listed on Appendix II of CITES.

#

Adult males are territorial. The male guards its territory from perches placed in the tops of tall trees, and from these perches sings to compete with males in neighbouring territories. While singing, the male moves his occipital plumes about. In 1996 David Attenborough filmed the first ever footage of the mating ritual of the bird.

The diet consists mainly of fruits, berries and arthropods.

#

The King of Saxony Bird of Paradise's mating courtship behavior consists of a combination of vocalizations and physical maneuvers, enhanced by its magnificent and unique plumage. The King of Saxony's occipital feathers or “head wires” are one of a kind as they no longer possess their regular feather structure, but instead are eye-catching ornaments that possess no functionality.[4] These feathers can be twice as long as the body of the male King of Saxony, and have evolved as the result of female selection, in which females select males based upon indirect genetic benefits which increase offspring fitness.[5] This process occurs due to male's lack of participation in the process of raising offspring, forcing females to assess male fitness through courtship rituals, details of which are below.
