I'll just re-reiterate though: if a tree falls in a lonely forest ... specifically a lonely, empty forest ... does it make a sound?
You said trees can hear, they can sense vibrations and communicate, so of course the tree makes a sound to everything around it if it falls.
Other animals in the forest have ears and experience hearing similar to us, so they’ll also hear the same tree fall.
What I want to note is that this is supposed to be a lonely, empty forest. Therefore, there are no actual animals.
But still, even then, what do we count as observation? What counts as sound? Is sound the pure vibration itself, or is sound the observation of vibration?
Which kinda comes down to my sentiment here: where do you draw the line at observation? What is observation?

For me, an initial idea that comes up, upfront, is the idea of Prescriptivism, where we’re first defining and prescribing the “correct” meaning of a word.
If we want to use “sound,” the meaning has evolved to practically just mean "vibrations through air/wind/etc)
It used to just mean the observed experience of such.
And so, some call it purely the vibration itself; others use “sound” and “vibration” almost interchangeably, especially in the context of sound fields.

From a sensory perspective, though, if you specifically wanted to argue that sound is strictly a subjective neurological experience, then if there are no eardrums or recording devices around to capture those pressure waves and convert them into electrical signals- to code them as noise- then the mechanical event occurs in total silence, technically.
But as you said, what about animals and trees? Which is a great point.
But I suppose the question was brought up in the 1700s.
Of course it ignores that (humans being the best thing ever to exist, especially back then), thus coming from a very humanistic point of view. What we observe is still uniquely different from all else, broadly.

If you then add, “okay, but animals can hear,” or even “ok, but plants can hear,” I believe it misses the philosophical point.
It’s supposed to be a lonely forest with no observers.
Otherwise, you’re making it less of a philosophical ponder for the person and more just saying: “if no one can hear, then...duh... no one can hear, therefore the action technically doesn’t happen.”
But it’s not supposed to be this immensely deep thought experiment. I think its something more of a neat philosophical thought, something maybe more personal.

What I believe you’re meant to take from it is: if an action happens where nothing can observe it, record it, understand it, remember it then does it happen at all?
But, at what point do YOU 🫵 draw that line of being 'unobservable' (without anything else to witness)?
like how in the 1700s, they drew that line at trees (and maybe even animals) going for a very human-orientated sentiment.

For example, if I pick my nose/fart (something you'd feel like you'd want to do in a private-sense) in my room (for example) ... then what about the bugs around?
What about the open window? What about the countless possible thing things that actually could've “observed” it?
I’m defining a pre-set private bubble and saying: what counts as an observer? And if none of those things fit that criteria, then I, I, am effectively alone. Unobserved, lonely, without observance in that moment in space and time.

That’s what I find really interesting about this.

Where do we all draw that line? Which really comes down to the person. I suppose that’s philosophy in total: what is your personal understanding of X, Y, and Z?
That’s what I like about it.

And that’s why I hope I didn’t come off too strongly when I said I felt a bit insulted
I didn’t mean it badly. I just meant that I felt the philosophical point was being missed, when there is definitely something there.
Sure it could be pretty useless but isn't that philosophy. We do it for the love of it anyways.
Philosophy is supposed to be the subtext, at least for me. And so being the deeper meaning within the question.
If you dismiss that and just say, “oh, that’s dumb,” I feel like you lose the point entirely.

@neon elk due to the law of conservation of energy a tree has to make noise regardless of if there is "a spectator" however u want to define that. Im not saying u think this but if u define a spectator as a human then that shows the hubris of the human race , a sound / happening isnt made for a human to hear / see , they happen regardless. Also a "lonely forest" would have to be one tree (which doesnt make sense unless u define flora of being incapable of interpreting sound) as i already mentioned trees can and will sense vibrations and communicate to each other whilst said falling tree is happening , the tree may be crying out in pain to the other trees.
