Ofc none of this makes them unplayable. It just means you have to be extremely careful. Deino is a VERY high risk high reward playable. Prime deino is VERY strong, similar to how rex is super strong. But in exchange they're SUPER hard to grow, incredibly so, and competitive and restricted in scope.
Unlike rex, which is supposed to be hard to grow and isn't.

I do think that deino should have a struggle against other deinos, that waterways need to be more connected, and there should be a lil more water AI variety. Also add ptera to the diet it's one of the few creatures deino interacts with regularly. (And turtles because it's lore appropriate.) And I look forward to the incoming kit where you can swim just under the surface. And I think if you're underwater you should be able to scent close things also in the water. But these are tweaks, I think the kit in general feels good, hard, high learning curve.

dont get me wrong, they are cannibals, you shouldnt be able to not worry about your fellow crocs. BUT i feel like the nature of the grab isntakilling them just because they put in 5 more minutes than you is my issue.

You start by understanding the map and where you can or can't challenge other crocs. What waterways are safe. Very small crocs are SUPER hard to see in the plants so you use that, you run on the river bottom and you're nearly invisible. Use land when you're tiny whenever possible. Never talk unless you're pairing up. Spend most of your early game on fish and the occasionally scavenge. Hit swamp sanc as early as possible and then alternate delta and swamp until you think you can sneak up river, or sneak back up river early and camp water access. Get eff digestion early so you don't have to eat as much. When you're too big for swamp or water access, make your way to the main river, highland lake, etc. Eat everything that touches the water that's bigger than a french fry.

It's very satisfying to be fg prime croc imo. But it's NOT easy, steep learning curve, lots of restarting and a bit of luck. You have to be accepting and understanding of your deaths. I think the journey is worth the rewards. I wish Rex felt more like deino - extremely difficult, big rewards.

petit pieds has population control, which locks a dino from being selectable if theyre overpopulated. this keeps the ecosystem from just being rex/allo but theres still generally more carnis than herbis at any given time, but i have seen the ratio change to be more herbi favored.

mettas den has no population control, but i do manage to see a good chunk of herbivores there as well

petits has 2.5-3x the carni to herb pop while giving incentives to play herbs. other servers will have 4-6x(if not more) carni to herbs. its just part of the game, herbs feel like a complete slog to play rn and PZ takes 0-1hr to spawn. you spawn in slow, you never get fast, and you have to take every fight that comes your way. herb QoL is just horrible atm so next to no one is playing it. along with stego/trike getting mauled by rex and dibble getting facetanked by allo and dying to 2 cera etc etc

The 9 requirements in the game are roughly as follows. (They are listed as this, but some work differently than listed.)

• Visit a Sanctuary as a Juvenile.
• Be Hatched from an Egg.
• Achieve a perfect diet.
• Visit at least 2 regular Migration Zones.
• Visit at least 4 Patrol Zones.
• Never become Infertile.
• Never have Muscle Spasms.
• Raise an Offspring to Sub-Sub Adult.
• Be an "Eligable" Prime. (This one is weird.)

There is a tenth requirement, its the Mass Migration zone one, and to my knowledge nobody has been able to difinitively trigger it, even with modded testing, so I'm not counting it. Keep in mind you do not need to meet every requirement, just like 5 of them... I think. It also worth noting that some of these are easy to exploit. For instance, you dont need to be a juvie when you enter a sanctuary, the raise to sub adult seems to trigger when the hatching hits juvenile, and the hatch from an egg one doesnt seem to trigger at all sometimes, but it does most of the time so thats good enough in my book.

The zones are a bit odd.
The zone needs to be active, but it doesn't need to show up on your scent UI. Basically, if you walk into an area, and see plant spawns, then the area is active. For carnivores there is a bit of a gray area where sometimes a migration zone wont count, this has been speculated to be tied to the 30 minute grace window, but I wasn't the one who discovered it so...

You can also leave and re enter a zone to trigger it multiple times. The timer seems to be around 15 seconds, so if you walk in, stay for 15 seconds, leave for fifteen seconds, then re enter, you can re trigger it. This is not an exact science though.

The "Eligable for Prime" requirement is just a free auto completed quest for some species, I dont know them off the top of my head, but I think its Deinosuchus, Beipi, Herrera, Dryo, Hypsi, Troodon, and Pteranodon. Someone please correct me if thats wrong. If you are playing one of those species, you can just think of it as needing to do one less quest.

So your game plan if you dont have access to other players to feed you or nest you, is to avoid cannibalizing, avoid hitting 0% diet, go to a sanctuary, get perfect diet, and then visit active Patrols and Migration zones.

You'll know you've gotten prime elder when you get a 4th mutation slot immediately after your 3rd mutation at 75%. If you dont get that 4th mutation, you will have failed, and need to try again on your next life.

Most of the dev team is comprised of old school gamers. We didn't grow up with how-to guides for all of our games. We just had to start playing and figure everything else out along the way. And that's what we like. We want learning the game to be a part of the gameplay experience as well.

A casual observer would think there isn't much to know or learn about. Right up until they start dying on repeat. My recommendation for survival is to make common sense choices in the game that you would personally make if you were dropped on an island full of dinosaurs. If you wouldn't run out in the middle of a field IRL, don't do it in game. If you wouldn't scream at the top of our lungs or talk a bunch out of fear of an animal hearing you, don't do it in-game either. Be aware of your surroundings at all times etc. You'd be surprised how much a shift in mindset will keep you alive. Then once you accomplish that, you can learn a bit more and go even deeper, so you can thrive as well as survive. Good luck out there. Trust no one.

You're gonna want to pay attention to the Migration Zone, Patrol Zone, Sanctuary, Preferred food (the icons have changed) and rotting food/bones if you are deino.

If you are a herbivore, its the same, plus you should avoid non preferred food, and as a carnivore just avoid rotting corpses, bones, or corpses of your own species, but those dont have UI.

deino thankfully lacks the problem of rot or same species. i get the genreal gist of the diets but some things still dont make much sense to me
