Of course, people have been talking about this for the entire lifetime of the game. Some people are just using very outdated PCs and complaining about optimization without considering that the issue might not be the game itself.
As for optimization, it really was better in the past. You can easily check this by looking at any YouTuber whose PC specs haven’t changed since Gateway released and comparing their performance to now.
And honestly, this might surprise you, but the game actually had very solid graphics with relatively decent optimization back then.
