Cera is good as you can eat everything, bones and rotten meat. So you can sort of chill and not have to worry so much about chasing after people ect. You can just learn the map but know you can pack a punch if something wants to mess around with you.

Tips for finding people I can't really give. However if you want to try and learn player locations you can play something like Galli. You are fast and can cross the map pretty easily allowing you to sort of find out where people are and commit it to memory.
You could also use Ptera but at least in my opinion it takes practice to get good at its mechanics and using thermals and slip streams to quickly scout out the map.

I loved The Isle progression; the nesting system, even though quite limited at the time, was really something that benefited the player who picked it up, because it allowed them to "skip stages" of progression to get to the dinosaur they really wanted to play, or at least get closer to their intended target.

It saddened me to know that we don't have this game mode nowadays. It has its positive side, allowing people to play with what they really want, but if you analyze it carefully, for example in the case of Pettitz, which is a server with good popularity, the T-Rex is controlled. Otherwise, we would have an infinite number of T-Rex or any other species, so in a way the player is "locked" and cannot choose the dinosaur they want as they please; they have to wait. In the progression system, it wasn't punishing because there were no slots available; it was rewarding. Everyone started small and aimed to reach a certain species, playing focused on staying alive until then. Besides this challenge, even when you achieved the desired species, you played as a reward.
