Okay so, just was nested as ptera, got perf diet, never got spasms, never infertile, went all the way from water access to swamp, hitting a sanc, and going through a bunch of pz's and a couple mgz, did all of this with a sibling. They got prime, I did not. and we did all of the exact same things.

yeah, i dunno what's going on. i've had it happen to me twice now. once as teno and once as raptor.

@obsidian hemlock it depends on which server you're on. if it's an official, they can be tricky to find. i think fish schools are bugged right now, but as ptera, you should be able to do the spearfishing thing during the day to make them appear.

Prime might as well be mandatory, as it directly determines your survivability against others, many frail elders are simply helpless against their counterparts. So it's pretty essential.

Also, honestly diets are on the same level of importance generally, it determines how fast you grow but nothing else beyond that. Really you can just wait around with zero diet and the game will play the same, just slower.

If anything, diets are more optional.

Diets being built with the player needing to eat a variety of foods is one of the worst approaches they could have taken with the mechanic. Which is a shame, because its a nice thought, it really is, the concept is wonderful.

But in execution by forcing players to eat a variety they drastically harmed the value of the individual meal. When you need to eat three meals, one meal holds far less weight. To have a system in a survival game that harms the value of food and shifts the players priorities away from staying alive and instead directing them towards keeping up a high growth rate to skip growth faster... is not a good mindset to design your survival mechanics around.

Even still, I think the devs may have even realized their mistake in designing the mechanic that way. But instead of... oh I don't know redesigning the flawed mechanic. They instead opted to make diets more trivial than the food they represent. Corpses give all three diets to carnivores and AI alone makes up the majority of a carnivores pallete, for herbivores its even more glaring, why even bother having three separate nutrients if you are going to provide all three in abundant quality anways?

They approached it with a varied diet as the foundation, then didn't even commit to it. Ending with the worst possible result, the worst of both worlds.

The priority has shifted away from survival. There is a distinct difference in impact between hunting, engaging with other players, all for the purpose of not dying as your core motivation- and hunting players for the sake of temporary benefits.

Those benefits hold very little weight compared to the value of your life. At the end of the day, when hunting for diets, you engage with the system because it saves you time, it speeds you along, it let's you skip through the boring part of the game and get to fighting. But that fighting has no extrinsic reason behind it... thats the point. Fighting to stay alive, and fighting for growth rate, are not even remotely equivalent.

There is a reason why food matters so much more in Legacy. Because that is your sole priority. Finding a meal means you can live longer, means you can continue to another day, without that impact... you are just fighting for the sake of saving time. It devalued survival because it changed why players engage with others. It shifted the point away from survival (staying alive) and instead made the point almost entirely begin and end with the temporary buffs you receive.

Then you probably havent been observing hard enough. They have consistently said a complete overhaul of mechanics like diets is unlikely whenever it has been brought up, several devs have talked about the core mechanics as being essentially done and only requiring polish. Rather than addressing or confronting the issues that theyve created they are just moving forward as it is. The pattern of behavior suggests it will not change, because they have never changed before, and they have actively moved against it.

There is no due time, there is no wait for early access, when there is an issue that is inherent to their approach to designing the mechanic then no amount of waiting or polishing mechanics will overcome those fundamental faults.

Low diet debuffs still keep the focus on the buffs. You are still hunting to avoid debuffs rather than hunting or scouring for food because otherwise you will be guaranteed to die.

A carnivore should not scent, see perfectly available and healthy food that isnt on their diet, and flat out ignore it, not paying it a second thought. Even with debuffs that wouldn't change how players think about food, it wouldnt reverse the damage that that approach to designing the mechanic has caused.

Their development and design has moved on from those foundational mechanics. They are only refining them, and building further development on top of it. Their returning to mechanics like Night Vision or camera controls are all polish. Adjustments made to the existing foundations, not reviewing the foundations they've already laid.

Those are set, those have not changed, and it seems unlikely to ever change. That is the pattern that has been shown since the beginning.

Unless they ever choose to just do another recode for the fun of it, we're probably stuck with things as they are.

All night vision changes have been fairly simple tweaks. The effects are different but the mechanic remains the same. Pounce to pin was an extension of an existing mechanic, organs were adding onto the foundation that was already there, the skin system was a much needed change... thank god.

But from everything we've heard it just sounds like they are taking the existing mechanic, and adding some limiters to it. Locking specific palletes to certain patterns, etc. Not a full remake of the system from the ground up.

Also, as light said, none of these are core mechanics. None of those involve going back and redesigning something from scratch, its all just changes or extensions on top of what's already there.

Once 75% of the roster is complete then these mechanics will be so deeply ingrained into the identity of the game that pulling them all out and changing them, accounting for every subsequent change that would need to be made across the entire game is so unlikely its laughable.

These are things that would need to be changed at conception, when they are initially being designed, when they are first being implemented. Not years and years down the line after you've already become dependant on them.

Change is unlikely, thats just how it is.

Well you missing a big point here that diet system was made to discourage people who was just growing by sitting in the same bush/tree for hours in Legacy. And not forget that growth in Evrima generally not a boring part at all because not full grown dinos are much more capable at active gameplay due to balance/sanctuaries/combat system and as such running around across the map is generally less of an issue

That's just not how communities like this operate, not just for The Isle, I'm not trying to single out you guys. But for pretty much everyone, to expect the people at large to take issue with, and suggest structural changes is too much. People will play a game, even if they have minor issues with it, they likely wont seek out further changes or anything like that, they will just continue until they either stop enjoying it, or ignore the things they dont enjoy.

You can have a diet system that accomplishes that, without all of the issues of the current system. Also, barely any of those have really been improved or affected by the existence of diets.

You can still just sit in a bush and grow just fine. Sanctuaries rarely accomplish anything other than giving juvie herbivores an easy elder requirement completion and a quicker start. Combat has very little to do with that, balance even less so, and juvie dinos being more capable hasn't really made people more active, it's just made it easier to get to full growth... thereby making it even further a chore.

If you were as vulnurable as you were in legacy then at least when you did occasionally need to take a risk, it held so much more weight because you couldn't just instantly scamper away at mach 10.

Diets, again, have had no positive impact on any of this.

Also you can choose to not maintain perfect diet and simply play safer. So it doesn't undermine survival part as much as you trying to say. You will still choose to eat non-diet food when you at brink of death by hunger

Some things are also just out of our control. The devs have put in a lot of work into this game and it shows. Not every game is going to be perfect, it’s going to have flaws. The devs are human, and game coding on this level is probably really difficult and some things probably wont work for the vision that was planned

Yeah, you can live without perfect diet, but with how easily accessible diets are since the onset of the system why would you bother? You can just camp a static AI zone or a few patrol zones and wait in a bush. That doesnt change the impact the system has on survival. The mindset has shifted, just because you have the option to technically ignore the system doesnt mean it hasn't completely changed how players will treat food as a property.

This is almost as dumb as saying that you can freely opt to play as a pacifist in a competitive shooter... like, yeah you can? But why would you, the game's mechanics and everything to do with it were not designed with that in mind. You can play without diets but that doesnt change the diets role in the players mind and the effect its had on the survival of the game as a whole.

Well I said that to point out that diet system doesn't undermine survival aspect by any means - you still have to maintain your hunger and it is more important where you choosing between dying of hunger or having less diet.
Camping AI zones barely can give you perfect diet anyway as carnivore. As for herbies it kinda the same because most oftent than not I see PZs giving only 2 diets and very small portion of the 3rd if you lucky.
