You make a new key if the pose you need to achieve would drastically alter the curve.

If it would not drastically alter the curve, you can just use your tangent handles to achieve the motion you want.

okay, so try to fix the inbetweens with curves first, keyframes if I can't do it

Tangent handles are what lets you manipulate how the curve flows into and out of a keyframe. Does the value remain consistent coming out of the keyframe? Tthat would be a foot being planted for instance. It does not move in the up axis again until the foot is lifted again.

Does it rapidly increase coming out of the keyframe? Rapidly decrease coming out of the keyframe? Gradually? Etc

Yes

That is why working with curves is so important because you can drastically reduce the number of keyframes you actually need to use, keeping the animation cleaner and less daunting.

one of the more basic mistakes I think I've been making is every frame is a full body snap shot, instead of just the limb or bone I'm changing, which makes editing motion more difficult the longer I animate, but I haven't found a good workaround yet

A simulation for instance, puts a keyframe on every single frame. So it can be really annoying to try to edit that data in the curve editor.

You really have to compartmentalize an animation and focus on one thing at a time. When you're starting out in animation. When you get some more experience under your belt, then you can diversify and start finding what your "style" is. But until then, it is important to work your way up.

TLDR you have to learn the technical aspects of animating in 3D before you can really cut loose with the artistic aspects of animating in 3D.

if I'm not wrong, Hypsi is a good example of that in action for The Isle, especially the scent animation

You just have to stop thinking of it in such dramatic contexts. The principles can apply to the smallest of motions. The principles are just there as a guide. How much or little you apply them is dictated by the motion you're creating, the style of animation you want to do and just your general discernment as an animator

The Animator's Survival Kit is a great book to have on hand

I'm sure you can get it digitally these days or find a free resource online. It's very popular

Ofc you run the risk of someone in the community noticing the squashed or stretched frames and screaming how it's not realistic, like the drag on pteras wings for the flying animation

@dense pollen I liked your carno piece, you said shadows aren’t well practiced, so if you wanted a tip, I reccomend not fully closing off the shadow by the tail, like making it fade out as the tail is further from the ground, making the shadow less precise.

If you mean where I draw inspiration from/who inspires me, there's lots of artists I follow who's style I admire for various reasons.

Some of my favourites are Drkav, Phobs, Haskien, Astarcis, TheDinosaurMann and a whole bunch of others. Most of those are on good ol' deviantart and a few on Instagram.

Also scrolling through this discord channel on my lunchbreak usually gets me itching to draw dinos by the time I get home 😂

Krita is free and you would need just a digital table
I bought the cheapest one (its called wacom one) and it works already very well, but the expensive tables have more buttons and keys to make your work easier

I do have the procreate app, but I don’t have the Apple Pencil I have a stylus pen that is almost the same thing just cheaper

Apple pencils (as long as your tablet supports it) is the best stylus. It provides pressure sensitivity, gen 2 has a button on the side you can hot key, and it even acts like a pencil. If you tilt it with the pencil brush in procreate it shades like a real pencil.

I decided to go for a brown crest due to a speculative idea i had. If they were laying down with their head on the ground, their body would blend in with foliage whilst their crest would appear to be a piece of wood or tree stump. Helping them blend in even more

To get the effect, you need to create a duplicate layer and disable its red channel. You can do this by going to the layer blending options and clicking the little r button. Then shift the top image by a few pixels (or however much you want), and tadah 👍

@drowsy coral i hope you don’t mind me asking, but how did you manage to make the feet stay on the ground? i know it’s likely IK but the simple method of plopping an IK bone behind the foot bone just makes the model go haywire for me because the armature is uneven, i just wanna ask what method you used? did you remake the leg bones or something?
unless you just manually adjusted the foot to stay flat with each keyframe lol

I do have an IK on the foot, but I also used the graph editor to help keep it relatively level

depending on what program you are using, I might be able to help set up IK

I personally use blender, and I'm simply updating rigs that I extract from other programs

a rig you make yourself might have deeper issues I'm not able to solve

I'm using the basic bitch version of IK with no knee or ankle targets

most of the "feet staying on ground" is through the graph editor and key frames, and possible without IK

on the pachy for example, I just added this IK bone

make sure the bones are not parented to anything when you set them up

and make sure to recalculate bone roll, I use the global Z+ axis to do that. You can find the option in edit mode, Armature, Bone roll

To remove the parent of the IK bone, go into edit mode, the green bone tab, and click the x next to parent

no knee target tho means you'll have to manually adjust the thigh if the knee decides to point in some random direction, like sideways

oh there is 100% some broken leg stuff going on here or there, and the other animations have some jank in them as well, not too fussed about it since these just need to be proof of concepts rather than animations that stand on their own

the full extent of the stego's back leg stretch was based off Elephant reference, but dinosaurs aren't elephants lol

Yeah, the logic mainly behind not fully extending the back leg is the power behind the bending of the knee and when you fully extend your leg like that it will hurt the joint. Main reason when doing leg presses you don't lock your knees

its a bit of both! i did the landscape and use a pic for the mountain along with adding some of my own textures to it the mountain but the trees are all mine here are some examples of my work the Para one is All hand drawn and the one with the logs is hand drawn with logs edited to fit the piece - Both are unfinished-

@drowsy coral just some feedback, I think you should do more stuff with the tail for animation as looking at the stego the tip kinda looks like a flail while the rest is kinda stiff if you catch my drift. The head and body movements is pretty good for the hypsi and stego as well
