To talk about the Troodon Smug-off we've got going on.

I'm unsure if any of them will be added in their current forms. The main problem I'm seeing is that the colorations of Troodon in general don't make nice emojis - they can blend together really easily and that just makes a smudge emoji for most users and that's not as pretty.

Yeah, don't compare your art to others, that's rule number one. Instead, try to find what you like about their art and build your own style from there!

Example is with this Carcharodontosaurus I did last night. I know how to do good linework and I guess my coloring is a work-in-progress but I don’t know how to shade well, or how to do backgrounds well either. A lot of stuff I just don’t know so it ends up looking half-assed.

Which sucks because I do pride myself in my capabilities when it comes to traditional art, I guess the big switch is just hard.

The coloring looks really good! As for shading and bg, I use Krita, so things work differently there. I suggest looking up tutorials on how to do shading in Procreate (I believe you are using). But the way I shade is I make a transparent layer above all of the coloring and just add some dark blue, purple or black for the shadows. I believe that there are 3 main ways of shading: cellshading, smooth shading and rimlighting. Play around with all of them to see what works best for you.

As for backgrounds, I'm not goot at them either, but again, just practice by trying out different brushes and techniques, while trying to copy a real life image. Go around your town or other area that you live near to draw inspiration, maybe even take pictures for better reference

I have a Levovo YOGA 720 that I use for drawing with Krita it's really nice. Though I had to go into the settings in krita and change something so it would work properly on a touchscreen@quiet kernel

I would say just as good ya, it's not as sensitive if you're not using the bluetooth pen that comes as a separate accessory, but I think it actually works better than drawing tablets if you're using like a cheap stylus or your fingers for drawing instead of the 'intended' stylus

Looking at your current style, I suggest to make a layer above your current color layer and make it transparent. Then block in some shapes that kinda look like feathers (quick mock-up)

However there is another way, I'll make that too

Sometimes just adding a more feather like texture in the lineart helps to hint at feathers, like so

You can also add some lines which hint at feathers on colors too

The example of how you want your art to look is a good final goal, but it requires a lot more blending and playing around with brushes. Your art will most certainly get there one day, but for now I suggest playing around with blending, adding shadows and lighting. Remember what Kasey Golden says - "Practice doesn't make perfect, but it makes something."

I skip around a lot, either SAI, clip studio, or sometimes photoshop, the dilo was done in photoshop since I'm still getting a feel for it

It has a very nice, traditional feel to it. That's mostly what I love about it so much. I'm trying to go for a more traditional look myself, that's why I'm asking (mayhaps I could steal so strategies )

That's kinda what I've been going for lately, sometimes a soft paper texture set to overlay and clipping mask does the job. A somewhat scruffy lineart helps too, just gotta adjust any hue/contrast on the paper texture if that's the route you want

If you look close, even the most solid parts of the dilo aren't solid, cause there's a transparent paper overlay. Sometimes really all a piece needs is a bit of roughing-up :D

If it was directly traced, it's subject to copyright. If it's traced but changed enough not to be the same, it isn't. But if the style happens to be similar or the same, a brief comment of who your art was inspired by is commendable.

Nah, they are pretty accurate. Couldn't find a clear image of the model, so I had to use Emily's art for a better view, but the hypo carno does have that fourth claw, just a bit smaller
