Does anyone know of a better way to do scales?

this head alone took me like 40-50 mins, and i aint even completely done with it, let alone the hands, neck, and feet

Oh god you’re stippling that looks like a painful way to do scales LOL

usually it depends on what you want your end product to be

Are you rendering it? You may just block out the big scales (like around the lips, eyes, nose, crest, etc. referencing reptiles is handy here) and leave the details for later when you’re rendering

If you’re doing solid colors or Lineart, you don’t need every single scale, the main big ones usually get the point across with maybe some fading into no patterns or small, scattered details throughout

Wrinkles help just as much as scales do too, and if you put too much detail into scales you may lose your wrinkles

You can do every scale, but usually it’s outlines of the scale, not dots for each scale.. which is still a really painful way LOL

its a line art, i just wanted it to be very detailed to make up for my other art faults, 😭

what i typically do here is do my scales in solid black, color the dino, then adjust the scale opacity, that way it matches the skin color, whatever it may be

when its done its pretty nice looking, but its so painful LOL

otherwise, i would have def gone with the scale outlines

your idea to just do the bigger scales is pretty good, depending on how i can do it, it might be better then my current method

As I remember, it was a 2d vertical platformer, the player was a pterosaurus surrounded by sea cliffs, and there was water aswell, you could dive underwater to catch some fish and then rest on the cliff with other birbs.
I've never found the name of this game later. It breaks my heart.

Did you know you can separate the background image and the actual lighting from an HDRi environment in Blender? It works in both EEVEE and Cycles, just use the Light Path - is Camera Ray output as a mix factor between 2 hdri's.

Whenever youre doing outdoor lighting, never use a Sun lamp, always use the Sky Texture in the world shader, it realistically and accurately replicates the sun and the scattering of the rays through the atmosphere, it gives a far more realistic effect

The allo render of mine you saw has 0 lamp/light objects, its all via the sky texture node

I adjusted it a bit to create the "sunset" effect.

Not to mention a bit of colour grading will make it look more appealing. I don't believe it's possible to get the exact skin in the render currently.

This particular skull was easy, I found a model online and asked the creator if we could purchase. Then 3D printed individual chunks, put them togather and painted them and then stuck them togather. For out other skulls (and one skeleton) we had to reach out to other museums. Request scans and then I sculpt them to slice them up into chunks

But it's just plastic so the kids can touch them, hold em and if they are damaged they are easy to replace. Also they are very light so kids can hold them. I wish I had the chance to hold a dino skull when I was a wee lad

If there is interest I would be happy to keep yall updated on the next skull we are building. It's our State dinosaur and it's gonna be huuuuge.

@vapid iron Looks good! Make sure your tangents at the start and ending keys match so you'll get the smoothest cycle possible. You've got a good understanding of motion. I recommend checking out Eadweard Muybridge's Animal Motion Show. Super great animation reference for a wide array of species. He was ahead of his time.

Well keep in mind, the keys may be the exact same. But if the tangents don't line up, you're going to get a hitch. So if you've ever been animating a cycle and know for sure the start and end are the same yet there's still a pop, that's probably why.

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right channel or if I should ask this here, but does anyone know how to fix this bug? Whenever I apply the shape keys for Elder or Juvenile models, the model becomes stretched, shrunken, and all messed up instead of turning into the correct shape. I'm not very good with Blender, sorry if this is obvious.

The biggest challenge i faced was that the design needed to work both in water and on land, but still be much better adapted to the aquatic environment (since this species is marine, even though it resembles an alligator turtle), soo… uhh, great

also with grass. Grass doesnt really look like that in real life, it looks like lawn mowed grass because its at the same height and colour with no other plants in it. If you want plants id advise going on superhivemarker aka blendermarket and buying the plant library and then going on another website called graswald, this will give you a scatter tool that you can use

But, I think next on your agenda would be to experiment with Depth Of Field. It helps really bring out the subject of your image. 🙂

If by sublte effects you mean scales and so, It depends, While i think in some parts of the drawing or depending on the drawing she might use a "Scale Brush" I think most of th etime she does it by hand. For that you can compare the lineart and values she does in the concept art (usially in Isle Phase Trhee and two) and complete artpices of Hers.

like, the super rough sketches or other line art she does,

i can do a similar sketch, but i use a different brush, so it comes out super bad,
all the lil details/effects i was talking about is stuff like how the stroke fades out and gets thinner at the end.

im mostly just curious what brush she uses for line art in general,

the lines also seem to have a tiny bit of texture- not quite just a simple line, (also why my lines look kinda bad)

OH Sorry about that, First of all which software are you using? Second of all, FOr those strokes with line thickness, you need a sensible preassure tables, so basicly any tablet and the brush settings must be able to do so. A siple pencil or pen can do the job, but same with a normal brush. Anything that has some texture you can thin out and apply preassure settings to achive those strokes. For them to look smooth and not pixelated i recomend a much bigger canvas, but again it depends on the software you are using

Guan, to me was slightly better suited for pack hunting, which is already part of its social life, (but more as the guans just feel pack life is more effective for large prey, and dont live long-term in a pack, so there none of the nice, ordered structure as a raptor pack, more of just a "i tolerate you, but barely, cause it benefits me" sort of thing)

which, combined with its venom, and its advanced tongue-tasting the air tracking thing snakes have could potentially make it *too *strong (of course, i could balance it out easily with a few nerfs tho)

Procerato, on the other hand, has very little going for it, and i think it better suits the venom,

plus, if guanlong gets the venom, then i would make it scaly (its current "thing" is its snake-like behavior and appearance, so no feathers, which looks kinda strange for a guanlong)

Procerato technically has that exact same scale/feathered thing, but i think it could fit the scale vibe a tiny bit better then guanlong,

in summary:

my reasoning makes very little sense, LOL-

i also saw guan as more of a brute force kinda dino, and procera as more stealthy, so the venom and guan's lifestyle would fit procera a bit better.

Neon dinos never appealed to me. Seems something more fitting for a coloring book

Magenta as a color reads to me as untextured, due to that color being used in Blender and other 3D programs and engines as the texture not working or it's an error. It's very visible and contrasty, and easy to spot. I would experiment with other colors and tone down on saturation. 👌 If you want to consider user experience, looking at that dino might limit the people enjoying it, as some are pretty light/contrast/saturation sensitive. 🦖

look. I have no life, also I got friends who helped me at the start, which made me better at working through blender and posing faster

its just practice.

like ive been doing blender since december last year. Which isnt even that long, but I do it alot more than others

meaning I can pump more stuff out, and learn from my mistakes

lets look at this one from a month or two ago

water looks bad, terrain is horrible, posing is alright, foliage is non existent at the front, its too overexposed and the shadows are voids of nothing

there also isnt any sort of volumetrics in the render, making the lighting flat and boring, the sun is also placed behind the camera

now im doing this, you can see fog, lightrays, depth of field. you can also see clearly what is happening in the render

now, im not the best, and im by far not the worst. but I still got a lot of progress to make

Ive done probably over 200-280 renders since I started blender, so i progress faster that way

This is genuinely why i hate drawing.

This friggin doofus hardly looks like a mira anymore

at this point, when stuff starts lookin like a different dino i just friggin do that-

thats how i got torvosaurus,

i was tryna re-do Guanlong, but when i drew the new one the skull looked like a Proceratosaurus,

so i decided to turn it into a procerato- since i needed a procera anyway

then the skull looked too much like a big theropod, so i turned into Megalosaurus

then, 2 more firggin transitions later, im left with Torvosaurus,

dingus looks like a ducking sauropod now

genuinely dunno what to do cause i need mira but i dont feel like re-drawing it to look like mira,

good thing is i can always save this drawing and when i feel like it fully turn it into a sauropod,

Here’s what i personally came up with that i would think would make the piece very dynamic with more your background character and show the movement in both characters. your smaller characters is very dynamic in itself i think it just need a small tweak to it’s tail for the most part (you could also extend the wing as it would be a counterbalance for such a sharp turn). Feel free to use it as a reference if you’d like 🙂

i love how unique it is- i always saw the spines on amarga and bajada as display, but i love how you turned them into something functional!

I think it will be the first and single sauropod on the Isle to actually attack with its neck/head region as its primary attack. It's funny because when I was developing the concept, I looked at a lot of depictions of bajada in the internet and thought, "hmm, this could be used for a great attack...🤔 " and so I did.

I'm even more excited to work on the elder and some other interactions, it really has a very prominent display, and it should look even more so with colors and animations.

It's cool to think of them as giraffes, even if their necks aren't always the same length or as flexible. I don't remember which sauropods make up your roster (if you've ever shown them).

This also reminded me of Arambo, initially, we considered some kind of duel mechanic for it, entirely based on giraffes, but we discarded it because it didn't work well within the gameplay cycle.

It's beautiful, well, I mean, also functional, it adds more resistance to the base of the thorns which need to be strong for attack, and consequently also adds an additional beauty, which is perfectly complemented by the colors .

for my sauropods, the necks will be a bit on the more flexible range- not like a snake of course, but pretty flexible,

Right now we are thinking of having

Magyarosaurus,

(possibly) Amargasaurus,

Apatosaurus or Diplodocus, (prolly not both, but it may work out)

Dreadoughtus (and potentially Brachiosaurus)

and Amphicoelias!

It's really a great roster, honestly, I love Diplodocus and I would really like to see it officially in the isle, but it seems to me that it has been scrapped.

Dreadnoughtus is also some great addition, we have one, but it's just lore content. Actually, we have many dinosaurs that are only present in the lore, and they could be added to the game if the public asks for it a lot.

Shunosaurus
Bajadasaurus
Carnamarus (this one is fictional, but I love it very much)

Well, I think the isle will have many sauropods after us...

And it really is, this creature is pure ragebait, it's a small sauropod that will urinate in the face of any dinosaur that tries to bother it, and the effects of the urine are as irritating as possible. Furthermore, due to its bitter flesh, no dinosaur (except scavengers) would be able to eat it.
And we're also thinking of introducing a new organ just for it, which is the bladder. If you try to ingest it whole (by swallowing) or eat the carcass without removing it, it will burst and you will suffer the effects of urine... I'm going to have a lot of fun with the complaints from stressed-out players about how unbearable he will be😂 .

Shunosaurus is a great addition because it's a type of "anky" sauropod, so you can easily find its niche on the roster.

It's funny to think that this could make a huge elder rex recoil like a child. It just needs to raise its tail and hips high, then they will all run away, if they know its destructive potential.

the thing i love about dinosaurs, is that if your not restricted to Paleo-accurate stuff, you can go insane with ideas.

Two dinos i just designed are our Megalosaurus and Gorgosaurus,

Megalo is our special niche theropod, since he is one of the few that will "naturally" prey on Spinosaurids, and will have alligator-like sensory organs on its snout,
and as a bonus can eat just about anything else,

Gorgo is our diabolical demon,
they are basically the Jurassic novel raptors, cruel, intelligent, and violent as heck.

they also have quills on their tail they can use to stab victims with, or even impale smaller animals on.
i was thinking of giving them a permenant blindness ability (if you get stabbed in the face, you get blinded in one eye)

the plan was that if you were blinded, and survived the rest of the encounter/fight, that you would essentially earn an achivement and rewards for surviving a while with only one eye,
but its probably going to be replaced by temporary blindness instead, since permenent, in a battle would be a death sentence,

Yeah, exactly, that's why I hate these paleo-accuracy chains, honestly.

Your ideas are really very good, and regarding the issue of blindness, I think temporary blindness is definitely the best option.
