You will be dying a lot regardless of species. Frankly the species you choose will mostly dictate how angry you'll be after dying, not the frequency of death lol. It's not a good game for getting hyperattached to specific playthroughs, you have to be invested more in the cycle than the individual. (seems obvious to state for The Isle, but it's not always something ppl really register before playing I think lol)

Oh also unless you're really dead set on a specific species, it's generally better to learn the ropes with a small herbivore than a big carni as it's a lot easier to find food and generally more forgiving when you're first starting (hunting is hard to pick up in this game, at least in my exp lol)

To add to this, I reccomend omniraptor as a starting carnivore if you really want to play one. It's fast, it packs a punch, most raptor players are quite friendly to other raptors. It doesn't take crazy long to grow so it isn't as upsetting when it dies

I think the isle looks better visually. PoT has some nice features like little quests but the quests just repeat forever. Gather nuts, gather shrooms, things like that. I agree with tucker, it just didn't keep my interest in the same way the isle does.

Everyone will have their own opinions ofc, but I really like the Isle for what it does - which is very straightforward, no frills survival as a dinosaur in a dinosaur world. I actually really enjoy the very minimal UI during gameplay, and how you kinda have to figure things out.

From what I've seen, Isle dinosaurs feel very distinct and different to one another, even though the goal is technically the same. I can load in as an omni, a hypsi, a galli, and will have three completely different game experiences based on those choices. Whereas while my POT time is minimal, I have heard from others who play that the dinosaurs feel more samey - different stats, but overall the same gameplay experience. I've also heard how it feels a bit more like a mmo just overall.

For me, I play the Isle for the in depth immersion. I can just completely sink into it and be the dinosaur, without thinking about things like stats and quests and things.

I might try POT again someday, but I think I've found exactly what I'm looking for in this game niche. So how you feel about it will prob depend heavily on what you're actually looking for in a dinosaur game, which you'll prob only figure out during playing - but that's part of the fun, right? lol
