tfg needs a story.
a modpack with a story immediately becomes interesting.
ftb genesis was nice, it had a plot, it fell off though
i hope tfg does fall to the same fate

strong dagger
#

imo, a modpack with no story is better than a modpack with a bad story

For me the quest book reads a bit like a story (or should). It needs to be accurate though.

Chapter Prologue (Stone Age) -
You, yourself or maybe some other people awake in an unknown world, with no knowledge about who you are.
You have knowledge about what is in this world, but no memories of ever learning it from anywhere, as if the World's concepts were injected into you or that your memories of ever being in this world were erased.

Your goal is to survive, as any being should, and discover what it means to do so.

Chapter I (Bronze Age) Copper Anvil - As you live and thrive upon this unknown yet familiar world, the knowledge you have not only accumulated but vaguely recall came in useful in the end.

The Metal Anvil was the beginning of your journey. It marked the point where even by a little, a being as weak as you could shape the world into objects that would allow you to retaliate against death's attempts in claiming you.

The things you normally would not be able to shape shall be made soft and malleable to you now.

#

(Interaction ) Death First Death - As you fall upon the cold floor, you part with the world you came to know for a short time.
But as you let go of this life that... maybe wasn't even yours, you feel as though the world had placed you back in.

As if the world of the dead rejected your pathetic excuse of Death as a way to escape the cruel world that doesn't want you either but is forced to have you.

But as you fall for the first time you feel as though you have lost something you would never regain again.

Unlike those around you, death was not enough to stop you.
Death was and always will be a mere setback...

Chapter II (Steel Age) First Steel Ingot - You have learned how to transform the world into tools and transmute the world into forms that allow you to better utilize its potentials. But as you recall and perform the synthesis of Carbon Steel, the event's importance allowed you to recall a particular memory.

It was vague.
Some sort of ship?
You recall a particular piece of technology that you thought you would never remember any more.
Unlocked Shuttle Compass (requires EV Polarizer and a Compass)

#

Chapter II (LV Age) First Electronic Circuit - The humble beginnings of technology are in your hands. Things are going well haven't they? But a looming feeling still remains inside your heart.
Something is... bugging you. As if you were restless. Perhaps it was the loneliness.
Right?

Remembered Diagnostic X-Ray Machine (requires ZPM)

//Not unlocked yet
(Interaction) Xray Diagnostic Device Right-Click the singleblock (doesn't need power at all as this is just lore) -
I see.
I feel it now.
Something is inside me.
It's dying to eat me alive.
Some thing...
Parasitic.

Remembered The Disease

The Disease - You arrived in this world with some sort of Disease. It hinders your ability to remember the past. In doing so however, it cannot fully consume you and take over. You do not know a way to rid of this disease. Even death does not rid you of it. But you know deep inside that one day, the Disease will take over, and all that you HAD, have and ever will have shall be made forfeit

Remembered the coordinates to a Planet...?
// Cerberus, The final Planet that locks Wetware becomes available in the Star Map.

#

Chapter III (MV Age) First Aluminum Ingot - Aluminum is the lighter alternative to Steel, as well as an ideal plating for the next voltage of machinery, medium voltage. Its properties of dissipating heat should allow more extensive processes and the synthesis of once far off chemicals.

With the technology you have now, something beckons you to explore places you previously had no access to.
Something calls for you from beneath the waters. Perhaps you may find out something down there?

Remembered Diving Suit, Submarine, and Shuttle Sextant

Shuttle Sextant - Points to the nearest [Sunken Shuttle]. That's all

#

[Sunken Shuttles] are found REALLY REALLY DEEP underwater. Usually surrounded by large marine predators. Best be prepared with some [Harpoon Guns], or [Depth Charges] to take care of any potential Leviathan-class creatures

These are similar to shuttles you found aboveground, unfortunately they landed into deeper territories.
The pressure and water corrosion pried the Memory Capsules open, practically making them and their contents useless!
Its composition is made similar to ordinary surface [Shuttles]. Something you cannot yet process until EV unfortunately.
There are however caches that may interest you here.

Contains Blueprints for... some kind of Bore. Whatever it is, perhaps you might remember once you enter the High Voltage Age.
Traces of Rutile line the walls of this Shuttle. Scraping it off might benefit you for Extreme Voltage.
Also inside, is a piece of deprecated alien technology can be obtained which can be used to craft specific items.

Alien Prospector Eye - A robotic eye that seems to have been destroyed. Now required to craft Prospector Tools starting LV.

Alien Teleportation Core - A long-since shattered crystal. Can be used to craft Travel Anchors starting at EV.

Broken Alien Diagnostic Mechanics - Some circuit that is basically impossible to use as is. Seems to be for diagnosing diseases? Perhaps you could repurpose some of its components to create an X-Ray Diagnosis for your "heart problem".

#

Chapter IV (HV Age) First Stainless Steel Ingot - Stainless Steel is a massive step up from regular Steel. Chambers created from this alloy can withstand corrosive elements much better, unlocking higher tier Chemical processes.

Its synthesis reminds you of something.

Was there always something beneath the bedrock of the world?
You vaguely remember something... of a way to breach it and descend..
Lower.

Remembered Bedrock Breacher (Mines bedrock which leads to a portal to the next layer of the earth, The Mantle (//Nether), and Bedrock Miners

`Bedrock Breacher - The "Nether portal", is needed to breach bedrock and enter the Mantle. Requires Titanium to craft the Bore itself.

[The Mantle] basically the Nether but renamed for cool. The Nether is the only placed to find Ilmenite Veins. Bauxite no longer gives Rutile. And is also home to the first source of Certus Quartz. Due to the inhospitable atmosphere of the nether Earth's Mantle, you require a Thermal Protective suit and an Oxygen Mask+Tank to explore it.
The Mantle is home to... Eldritch creatures, for some reason. Your biggest threats are wither skeletons, ghasts, and sometimes evolved burning deep sea fishes.

The Mantle contains nether structures still obviously (no more ruined portals though).
I can't think of any gates that involve the Mantle for next tiers, feel free to add some.

#

Chapter V (EV Age) First Titanium Ingot - Titanium. It is by far the highest heat resistant metal you have synthesized so far. It is, atleast right now, the only thing that can withstand the intense heat of the Bedrock Breacher Drill.
Titanium is a nostalgic metal for you, something about it sparks... Space.

Remembered Access Codes to Fallen Observatory

[Fallen Observatories] can be found in mountains. They were useless as they're made of EV-processable stuff and required some form of pattern signature that you have no idea of to unlock to enter... Until now.
Titanium memories opens these up allowing you to discover what's inside.
That's right, Rocket Navigation Blueprints! They're needed as a material for the Rockets themselves.
Also, there is a massive telescope in the middle of a room pointing into space.
The bench seems to glitter a little, have a seat will you?

#

(Interaction) Observatory Sit on the Telescope Bench -
You peer into the Telescope (get blindness). And you remember.
You were not originally from this place.
This is not your home.

Remembered Star Map, Press K to open

Star Map - Basically just Ad Astra Star map. Shows a list of all Planets that are accessible eventually

There are also Lenses in the chests here that allow you to make Socs ( or was it asocs). Only way to get them.

Now that you're EV you can finally make the EV polarizer and make the Meteorite Compass Shuttle Compass, the gateway to a real genuine intact Shuttle Memory Capsule!!

[Shuttles] Are new structures that contain Memory Capsules. The plating can be macerated and centrifuged to obtain trace amounts of Tungsten, now a requirement for the Tier 1 Rocket using very little amounts.

Contains the same stuff as the Underwater version. These ones however do not have trace Rutile dust.

[Memory Capsules] These are locked inside Shuttles. Prying one open with a Shuttle Compass as a key will unlock Inscriber Presses, the only way to obtain them, as well as the assembler blueprints for a Tier 1 Rocket (which is needed for its construction).

in the end its discovered you are actually John gregtech brother of greg

strong dagger
#

I appreciate the effort but this is really too much imo

eager basin
#

i dont see any modpacks with a story like what i just made

jolly apex
#

Make the lore just the minecraft movie

strong dagger
#

for me, I want tfg's main draw to be its gameplay and mechanics

eager basin
#

which is like not even terrafirmacraft anymore whatsoever

#

if only tfc had an addon that added heat past brilliant white

#

imagine blue and purple heat

strong dagger
#

yeah it's called the EBF 😛

eager basin
strong dagger
#

part of minecraft's appeal is how vague and open ended it is - it lets people invent their own stories

eager basin
#

i guess

#

i still really like the idea of the wetware world

strong dagger
#

I think it's more fun to just put fun things in the world and let people come up with their own ideas for what happened

eager basin
#

i see

#

this small storyline atleast gives some context in the random hivemind world lol

strong dagger
#

ruins everywhere and everyone's stuck in the stone age? what could be the reason for this? idk, let them make up whatever they think is most exciting

jolly apex
#

eager basin
#

its hard to make progression feel interesting when its just gtm all over again

jolly apex
#

i mean most modpacks dont have lore at all and their progression is still pretty fun

eager basin
#

you could just add space bases infested with random aliens and allow the players to let their imaginations run wild

eager basin
jolly apex
#

tfg does need structres urgently

eager basin
#

theres so much potential in a "starting from scratch i will discover the universe"

#

leaving it to player interpretation is very boring imo

jolly apex
#

I feel like hammering "THERSE LORE" is kinda boring, just make things that IF you look closer theres questions to be asked

eager basin
#

it makes the players feel like theyre not just following a story

strong dagger
eager basin
#

even though i believe a large appeal on roleplay packs like these is a story

eager basin
#

i still cant help but absolutely marvel about the way i did the progression here

#

it really feels like a videogame

jolly apex
#

self glazing is crazy

eager basin
#

titanium reminds you of space.

you remember the observatory

and that you were not from here
that this is not your home

#

im really upset how this will prpbably never come to fruition despite being the perfect progression for a gt pack

jolly apex
#

I feel like the whole story leaning on remembering shit is kinda weird

strong dagger
#

amnesia as a plot device is zzzzz

lucid fulcrum
#

No, it does not need story

heady sun
#

Love the enthusiasm, but I feel like having a story is a little corny

silent bane
#

Structure I think is good thing that really has nothing

eager basin
#

and those being from your old kind that was wiped out by the parasitic disease

#

its really easy for packs to make ruins and stuff and attribute it to "idfk some random civilization" but by actually creating an exposition behind it you're offering something the players can ponder about

#

just a side note. having a story gives a reason to explore the world for pois

#

ev+ once you reach space pois would become more massive.

for instance, a space base on the moon with repairable hv machinery as well as a multiblock core that you can pickup to create a rocket assembly line multiblock.

or a massive outpost in mars that contains pieces for a navigation device for outer rim planets past jupiter

#

or in neptune a massive "alien" base that has an elevator that leads directly into neptune's core where a massive inactive "perfect" naquadria crystal lies and the only way to unlock crystal processors is to extract from it with a Crystal Miner multiblock

#

these type of progressions can be obviously brought around by the quest book.

"hey go to neptune, you need something there for crystals"

but thats a rather plain way to do it no?

#

why not build the story up as you approach neptune and make it out to be some massive alien space base by your kind long ago?
or else you're basically making cool shit for the hell of it and attributing it to some random precursor race

#

i mean it wouldn't be obvious at first that it was your kind that made these bases and you just didn't remember
and that's what the exposition is for

it provides revelations

#

its really hard convincing people that insist that the pack should be just any other sandbox pack with cool structures

#

atleast having a story to discover creates a reason to progress other than seeing big numbers in your screen

#

to actively strive to build machines that allow you to discover the lore and not just get more of a thing at a time

strong dagger
#

having to get lucky with finding a structure and looting it isn't very interesting either imo

eager basin
#

the gates (the stuff needed to even loot them) are the compasses themselves which is discovered every milestone

eager basin
#

its also really satisfying building the context/world building of the past by reading journal logs you can discover in pois

#

its just generally more content

sour musk
#

I think making a good story is extremely difficult and really tough to make work with a pack like TFG as there is always many different approach to a solution

eager basin
#

yeah that's true

the story i presented here is just one of many

#

i tried my best making the world feel isolated and alone

#

so dialogue wont happen in the present, it will happen in the past through record tapes or flashbacks

#

its buildup towards the final resolvable conflict and post game content

#

just a fun idea

ENDGAME CONTENT
Time Machine - Confirmation
Upon travelling back in time you cannot go back to the present until you have completed the storyline! Do so at your own risk.

Right-Click to Travel back in time, playing short cutscene, storing your entire inventory in a seperate storage and giving you an empty one, locking your ender chest, ender tanks, all forms of wireless, and placing you into the past.

You will now progress from a point in the past before the disease outbreak IN EARTH.
Your goal is to reach Cerberon before the disease outbreak.

Your deadline is 90 in-game days or 30 real life hours.

Optional Subtasks that delay the outbreak by a few more days can be achieved.

Content here will be accelerated, almost all automation-based multiblocks are accessible pre-MV and accelerated Chemlines and advanced chemlines like PBI are accessible at any voltage.

#

I believe a massive way to fix problems with freedom is introducing a Sandbox Mode and Story Mode.

wherein sandbox mode has all researched unlocked the nothing is gated by the questbook aside from resources.

and story is as is

#

if you think about it nothings really being gated by the storyline, atleast shouldn't be.

at best you swim down to the mariana trench and find blueprints but that's all

strong dagger
#

yeah it's called creative mode

eager basin
#

the storyline was never meant to be a major decident. its more like optional content.
obviously you need to do the exploration part to reach space, crystal, wetware, etc. but you can just skip reading if storylines aren't to your taste

eager basin
#

but you're still in survival mode

#

and can just progress normal gtm + the structures

#

the structures won't have any lore or anything. they'll just be there, as structures

#

so i believe right now, you guys should make the structures keeping in the possibily of lore in mind and develop strictly sandbox mode for the time being.
