Exactly as the title says, no matter how many supports I place or how I place them, they don't seem to prevent cave-ins. Not sure if I'm missing something or if the supports just don't work for caves.

make sure they touch the roof and its every 4 blocks apart or so but apart from that idk

They are touching the roof and I do have horizontal supports, so Idk

#

Debating just disabling cave-ins cause this is silly

I am on version 0.7.12

Once a cave-in has started, it can affect the supported area too

Im having them specifically start above supported areas

If you ruin a mine too hard, it'll be very hard to recover it

#

You can do a bit of an abuse and place non-stone blocks on the ceiling to prevent stone from falling

Interesting, thank ya

#

Started another hole, that one block on the other side of the support from me is about to start a cave-in

#

This pattern seems to keep it stable enough, but even this still puts it on the border of collapse

I was able to get the design above to work, as I expanded further the cave became much more stable

also keep in mind that the 4-block support reach only applies to the supports which are only going horizontally. if it has any vertical component then it doesn't provide support. ie. your support posts don't actully support anything, so start counting your radius at the x/z of the post, not the block past it

The way cave-ins work is that each block you mine checks for a large radius around you for unsupported blocks, to see if it caves in. Once one is triggered by a block outside your support range, it can still target your supported blocks which is what can cause them to cave in.
