So the one i'm helping is on endeavourOS.
Now i'm not too sure how RAID works turning 4 1 terabyte drives into 1 4 terabytes drive but he wants the endeavouros install section to see those 4 drives as a single 4tb drive as it does on windows, his previous os. We have drivers but they wont compile properly. github: https://github.com/thopiekar/rcraid-dkms
#[SOLVED] Trying to help someone! 4 nvme drives RAID

i would recommend NOT using raid
but using LVM instead
how would he easily switch to lvm?
raid is somewhat annoying and tedious to setup if you arent going for the data redundancy
okay sent it to him!^^
note that it would require a reinstall
and potentially some manual setup
well he is switching to endeavouros
what does that matter?
sorry lol
he might need to do some manual setup in the command line before turning to endeavour's installer
just saying
may i ask specifically what commands should he do if he ever had to?
look at this section
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/LVM#RAID
also just a correction im saying that its not recommended to use raid im saying its not recommended to use hardware raid
becausee software raid using LVM is a lot more flexible and easier to setup
and have less quirks
thte raid level you are looking for is 0, aka striping data across mutliple drive
he said that you know that he wants this bootable right?
i mean, he is installing endeavouros on it'
pretty sure it can be bootable
though im not sure how
actually yeah it can be bootable if you store initramfs and the kernel inside efi
because in order for something to be bootable:
- bios needs to be able to read and execute the bootloader in efi
- bootloader neeeds to be eable to load the kernel and initramfs
and initramfs can handle the compleex stuff of setting up LVM mapper device and stuff
i see
hes asking if you could join us at linux for all lol
is that a discord server?
yeah but i invited him to this server so he can interact with the forum\
ok he just joined
@light glacier hes going to read the rules first, ill ping him so he'll be involved
hello, thanks so much for your help to this poin!
honestly this might be easier if you just install vanilla arch
with or without archinstall? x3
you might have to fight the endeavor os installer just to get it to use the lvm partition
yeah
thats true
so basically you'll setup efi on one of the drives
fill the rest of that drive and other drives with lvm partition
create the lvm mapper device, and feel free to do whatever you like next
setup luks or put filesystem of your choice on top
ive never worked with lvm before, what would i do?
look at the wiki and follow it to setup LVM in the way you like
which in this case would be making a raid 0 setup
yes
also, you will face the choice of either (unnecessarily) putting a partition table on the other 3 drives or just use them raw
i would recommend making a partition table even though there is only one partition
it makes sure most disk tools will be able to recognize the drive at the cost of a little less space
though you can do it without partition table too, it would still work, just might break some disk utilities you may use in the future
everything you are saying makes sense space is not the issue for sure so if it makes things easier I will, I have a lot of reading to do first then.
ill help him with the steps on arch, because im nice :>
Thanks again and have a great week!!!
i think ill tag this as solved for now
he'll get back on this tomorrow
%close
idk how to close lol
... solved
