So ive been distrohopping for quite some time now, i can ude linux pretty profficiently im just not knowledgeable on the tech behind it much but i just cant seem to have a "good" experience on any distro considering i get the most esoteric and weird issues that plague me.

So i would like for some people to properly give me a rundown on some distros and like their differences from something like arch, and ill name what ive tried so far and give explanations. I kinda just want something thats good and lightweight but also stable i dont want shit to perma break. But i also am not as techy as most in this server so would yall give me like a proper rundown on the pros and cons?

Debian: it was pretty meh and funnily enough didnt have too stable of an experience considering readding "silent splash" to the grub file straight up removed the package manager from existance somehow so i dont like debian

Arch: vannila arch is probably one of the best bets i have right now but making an install script and all is something entirely new to me but i do like arch for its features tis why im using a derivative rn

OpenSUSE: also one of my best bets considering how ive had a decent experience with it OTHER than a few gaming problems but other than that yast is a lovely tool, just havent had too much experience with it.

Ubuntu: was my first but i think you all know why i dont really wanna use that anymore lol

Mint: a little too basic and "newbie" focused for me plus i want to experiment with some wms such as hyprland which it is absolutely not suited for

Nix: seems pretty cool other than the fact that configuring it is much harder imo than any other i couldnt get most shit to run well but i dont have that much experience with it either

Garuda & Endeavour: currently using endeavour just having a taste of the arch derivatives because i havent used linux in a while. They seem decent but dont really fit my taste that much and a little bloated for me

#

I think ive tried more but i cant remember rn

just use arch, uvsaid its thr best best bet and ur already using endevour os

maiden ferry
#

I actually never installed arch myself lol so yeah

torn seal
#

its a good place to find new distros to try

#

i see you haven't tried fedora yet, ultramarine linux is a great introduction to fedora

#

not sure how you removed the file manager by running update-grub on debian stable )i assume) but you can try out debian testing, it's quite reliable and has a good package base

#

if you want to go niche there's solus

#

or void linux

#

or alt linux

#

really the only difference between distros are the repos and the installer

#

sometimes a distro will customize a desktop environment but its nothing that cant be replicated

#

you're not going to notice a huge difference between distros with the same desktop environment

maiden ferry
#

Yeah

torn seal
#

some interesting desktop environments would be enlightenment, cinnamon, budgie, and maybe icewm

#

im assuming you've already used xfce and kde

maiden ferry
#

I wont be using DE's

torn seal
#

oh are you just using the TTY

torn seal
maiden ferry
#

Just a daily driver for basic stuff xd

#

Need it for my old laptop

torn seal
#

i mean you could get a better terminal experience with something like kitty and cage

maiden ferry
#

Preferably a wm

torn seal
maiden ferry
#

Yes

torn seal
#

if you want to try a new wm there's jay

#

its on the aur

#

actively developed and supports a ton of the wayland protocols

#

im using it on a chromebook

#

it would probably go well with quickshell

maiden ferry
#

Hm alr

torn seal
#

and the ly display manager

#

its a very interesting experience

maiden ferry
#

Lol alr

#

I dont really know the difference between any of those things btw

#

Nor do they mean anything to me

#

Im not very knowledgeable on that

torn seal
#

eh it doesnt matter all that much

maiden ferry
#

I just use the defaults cuz it doesnt really matter to me

torn seal
#

all distros are all packaging the same software from the same people at the end of the day

maiden ferry
#

Ig

#

I just wanna choose a final distro to be on and rice the fuck out of it

torn seal
#

if you want high maintainence i'd do arch or for low maintainence i'd do opensuse tumbleweed

maiden ferry
#

Yeah

#

But ill try more just for fun

torn seal
#

i have one arch (cachyos) device and everything else is opensuse tumbleweed

#

except for that chromebook

maiden ferry
#

As per your tag

#

#
