#SSD detected but unusable

I recently got a t480 thinkpad with no OS on it. It used to be a company work laptop and was working before but now its got no OS on it and when I use an arch, ubuntu, or windows bootable install media to install a new OS on the SSD inside of this thing it shows the SSD as 0B and wont let me do anything with it. I have no idea. I tested a spare nvme ssd I had as well as the NVME SSD that the laptop came with and both of them dont work. I tried different install medias in different ports, tried different bios settings but cant figure this out.

PLEASE help

aight my bad

#

dim crag
#

Yes, thanks

river frost
#

im running the live usb of arch on it so I am not sure how to copy it out of that

yea

#

I checked a few times it should be good I see no damage and everything is seated properly

dim crag
#

My guess is it looks like this your disk inserter?

river frost
#

yea

dim crag
#

Ok, because that cable looks like something that can go very wrong over time

#

Especially on the motherboard side

river frost
#

the thing is it was an old company laptop and the IT guy ran it when I was at the office yesterday

#

and it bootedup

dim crag
#

(Your dmesg does not even show a clue that you would have this disk)

river frost
#

so like there is still a chance that the cable broke between now and yesterday?

dim crag
#

So either it is power problems, cable problems or disk are absolute toasted

river frost
#

shows it i think

dim crag
#

Ok? Can you try show me that output?

river frost
#

yea 1 sec

#

its short output but sdb is probably the ssd since there is no other storage plugged into this thing

#

other than the arch usb and the ssd

dim crag
#

I think the sdb are your SD card reader based on:

[ 12.346337] scsi 1:0:0:0: Direct-Access Generic- SD/MMC 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 6
[ 12.348375] sd 1:0:0:0: [sdb] Media removed, stopped polling
river frost
#

but it shows as 0B

#

wtf

dim crag
#

Yeah, because no disk are inserted

river frost
#

ok so its just not detecting it then which is weird cause yesterday afternoon it was fine

#

the ssd that is

dim crag
#

Yeah, so I would think it is a cable problem

#

(I can see the laptop does not seem to have a SD card reader? So yeah... that makes it more strange)

river frost
#

it does i think

dim crag
#

Ah it does actually. Found another spec sheet πŸ™‚

#

Then yes, the sdb are your card header πŸ˜›

river frost
river frost
#

hmmmmm

#

i really dont wanna order a new part and wait another few days

#

let me see

#

if its cooked

dim crag
#

Do you have another computer where you can test the disks?

#

So you at least know the disks are fine

river frost
#

the disks work

#

100%

#

i tested with 3

#

and i know 2 work for certain

dim crag
#

Ok yeah... then the question becomes the cable or the motherboard

river frost
#

yea thats how i did it when i was testing my other ssds

#

on it

#

the cable looks fine

#

but idk if its busted on the inside i guess

dim crag
#

Yeah. I guess there are no stupid BIOS options to disable the disk controller πŸ˜›

river frost
#

even on the BIOS i dont see the drives so its not even an os thing

#

yea

#

hmmm

river frost
dim crag
river frost
#

on this laptops bios too

#

but nothing storage related on here

dim crag
#

Ok, I must then say I have no more advice to provide πŸ™

kk thanks will wait
