were these drives used on windows previously? Possible they have the ntfs dirty bit set which is a bit annoying

I might suggest trying out gparted for the partitioning, but to fix ntfs dirty bit its

Run ntfsfix: Use ntfsfix /dev/sdX1 (where /dev/sdX1 is your drive).

yes they were used on windows im on arch and i cant see gparted anywhere in discovery

Your able to get the iso from their site and put it on a usb

Or grab medicat which comes with a bunch of tools for this type of scenario and others
