#How to remove space from windows for arch?
307 messages ยท Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Resize in windows
diskpart doesnt work either
Then fix it
You need to find out why it can't resize it more than some amount of space, otherwise you'll just end up with corruption
i stlil hve 391gb free
yous hould post the error. we can't help fix an error that we don't know the error of.
Use the gui
i dont have a screenshot of it
that one allowed only 291 mb to shrink
ohh
where do i find that?
wait it increased to 6561
i didnt change anything
i need 111,616mb
so im nowhere close
To find what is blocking
thanks will check
... winresize
#17458 ๐ฃ If you cannot shrink the windows partition enough then find what file is blocking the resize
https://superuser.com/a/1323010
Then try
https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/4a05sf/comment/d0yz6ui
And remember to undo the changes after resizing, the pagefile.sys is recreated automatically once the relevant option is enabled
I added a note
whats that?
this thing alone doubled it
... is a command for the bot to print a note
the superuser one is for a diffierent issue though, since i literally cannot click the button to shrink, so i cant see evert viewer for it
so where do i use it>?
oh nvm im dumb
.
Why not
There should be no reason why it's grayed out for the C partition
see the size available itself is only 12ooo
12000*
so if i enter a number more than that it wont allow
but the user in the post their size available was larger than what they wanted
but they had another issue
so yeah
Checked to make sure that just opening that windows doesn't make the event?
Can't put a larger number in enter the amount of space to shrink than in the size of available?
How about just a bit over the size of available shrink space
BEcause total size after shrink 0
indicates the amount of shrink is bigger than the total size
but the total size before shrink is literally more than four times what i entered
Yeah
let me try
setting it to 12672 (the max given)
gives a correct calculation
but if i set it even ONE higher, it jumps to 0
like it goes from 46k to 0
๐ญ
Ok shrink to that size first
ok
its only showing 294 this time
idk why
after re-running, its at 6.5k
it keeps changing
should i still do?
There's also a expand
ah ok
gonna take ages but ill try
6gb at a time
still 109 gb
after doing it once the free space comes as 0
Show the whole windows partition manager window
Tried running a defrag?
yes
did it like 20 times todah
also did a cleanup
disabled hibernation
removed pagefile
any idea what to do?
got this in event after the 6gb shrink though
should i navigate to it?
yay!
according so sources it can disappear after a system reset
is that worth trying?
im genuinely okay with doing it
wont take long
Ok
The second comment in that suggests the removal command is a bit different on win11
so tell me which command to use
the one in the comment
this?
i will also need it again later though right?
Same is in the command and the other answer
ok deleted
checking again
๐ค
no its at 12.6gb now
ill do the same thing again and check
this now
is the file more important or the cluster?
is auslogics disk defrag a good app?
people use it to visualize locations of storage
Then to readd the journal fsutil usn createjournal m=67108864 a=8388608 C:
I checked what size mine was and it's the sizes in the ss
so i just run this exactly?
After the necessary resizes are done yup
what do i do abt this?
I think for this some other program has to be used
oh
There's resize tools more advanced than the windows built in one
called?
Idk what's the best one
idc abt best, just tell something that gets the job done
Try a defrag now
contig.exe 'c:\$mft'
installed it
this exactly right?
I don't think it's installed?
i just installed it
You have to navigate to the dir its in
yeah
but the command is exactly the same right?
yeah
Try $Mft
ok
the one that failed is the BITMAP one though, not the issue causing one
let me try partition again
i got 26 more gigs!!!
still like 60 to go
lol now the issue is this ๐ญ
the bitmap file
so yeah.....
do i run the same thing again?
Yeah try
https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/cannot-shrink-c-partition-due-to-mft-bitmap-error.3822507/ exact same failure here
Hi,
-> I cannot shrink C: partition in Windows 11. 105GB is free yet in Disk Management I get around 24-26GB only. It gives the error of unmovable files. (Full specs at bottom)
-> I am writing this after disabling hibernation, page file, system restore, and restarting my laptop.
-> Now, when I...
chkdsk C: /f /r
Then Answer Y
to have it check the system the next time you restart
ok
May take some time to do it
It'll start it on the next boot
Not shutdown
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) y
yeah thats why
Y to this
done
gn
unrelated question: if i need to reset a pendrive i got gparted on, i can just format it in windows right?
yeah
ok
also i restarted cuz bored
and it ran
but like it didnt change anything
still 0 bytes free
have you tried AOMEI Partition assistant
no
should i?
._.
Backup your files and try that
so AOMEI or perfectdisk?
Theres also UltraDefrag which is open source
its paid
Oh it is
https://sourceforge.net/projects/ultradefrag/
Please note, here you can find the latest open source release of UltraDefrag (7.1.4). The most recent UltraDefrag release (12.0.0) can be found on our official website:

UltraDefrag is a disk defragmenter for Windows, which support...
oh
Used to be open source
Well download the open source release from the srouceforge
k
Idk, it's from 2020 but windows shouldn't have changed much in that time internally
Well just use it to analyze
Won't touch files
Yeah
@acoustic remnant you there?
@pliant fossil so you recommend AOMEI?
Because resizing is inherently dangerous
my friend told me moving bitmap isnt possible
ah ok
Maybe, maybe not
Maybe the third party resizers can do it
yeah it's always been my go-to for windows
I've never experienced any issues
idk how it works
so i just set its size to total minus the amount i want?
@pliant fossil
i just need to verify how to do so i dont mess up
it doesn't
it said so for me....
to resize your windows drive you needa go into preos/preboot mode
aomei does that for you after you tell it to execute
wahts that?
i did
what's on the right panel
Minitool partition wizard
free?
its safe right?
what do i do here???
@naive otter
its literally paid
exact same thing as AOMEI
NO WAY
65GB CLEARED ON ITS OWN!
now its $Mft/DATA
finally.....
its done.....
yuh that's legit an AOMEI/EaseUS Inbetween clone
live boot, open gparted, allocate the free space to arch
