i need help self hosting a file server, looking for software

i am hosting it on a machine running arch linux, i need it to work both on linux and windows and i need it to be password protected so i could access it from outside my local network

It would be enough for me, but not for my family members, i want to replace remote storage (like dropbox or Google drive) because they have limits that are too low for us

i think Nextcloud is made for your plan, you can run it on docker or set up without docker

arch server experience is miserable. I strongly reccomend debian. especially if it's your first time.

on Debian everything comes preconfigured to work on a server, on arch it doesnt

By the way you also have to worry about port forwarding if you wish to use this server outside of your home

I mean, access it without being connected to the same LAN as the server

Never tried pi hole or wire guard, but I do open ports normally
