#installing arch on a thinkpad from 2006
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
According to Microsoft Copilot, I haven't done a manual install before
You'll want to do MBR because your laptop is from 07
The letters in the square boxes are the letters to enter into the terminal to get cfdisk to do what you want
Glad I could help and as always double check AI generated answers as they can be wrong. Being very transparent by screenshotting the response
microsoft copilot lmao
I love it, great answers for C# coding questions, I do a lot of development in C#
fun
im gonna leave this open because im prolly gonna have another issue later
thx for ur help tho
Happy to help, feel free to ping me if you need help in the future and I'll try to help
thx :3
damn this laptop only has 2 gb of ram
should i max it out
wait im broke
nvm lol
how much swap should i use for 2gb?
def gonna do that
GNOME might be a bit too intense
Up to you but at least 2GB
That way you have 4 GB
i was gonna put a cool win95 like wm
Many laptops still only have 8GB so 4GB is low but doable
So another 2GB of SWAP
you can do that??
Long as you have the disk space
then wont all the ram turn into swap?
But if your disk is slow it might make sense to have less swapiness
In an XFCE based environment you could probably use just2GB plus some swap
The thing I worry about is your web browser
Firefox needs a ton of RAM
Okay Copilot recommends "2GB of RAM or less: Allocate at least 2GB to 4GB of swap."
i put 2gb
But you could get away with less because you have an XFCE based environment
2GB is plenty
I am running a GNOME system and even with several apps open at once I'm only ussing 9.3 GB of RAM
Including multiple docker containers, firefox, spotify, discord
i need to put on some weezer i just realized
I think both should be primary
double checking
Okay it doesn't matter
Flip a coin I guess
💀
extended it is
actually primary is less complicated
i got a brand new ssd for this idiot
its just gotten partions written to it for the first time
surprised a thinkpad from 2007 can use an SSD
i was too
SEnd me a pic of the laptop
Curious what it looks like
Esp with an SSD swap could be a lifesaver for the lack of rAM
T60
i rescued him from a 2nd hand store
35 freedombux nipple included
👍
ohh
what fle system should i use?
ext4 it is then
same
bro this is such a fucking vibe

i need to know what ot do for internet
i have it connected via wireless
what do i install here
ive never gottena rch to install manualy without somehow fucking up drivers
i dont wanna fuck it up here
not drivers im dumb
you could use your phone and USB Tethering
my phone locked
That's what I do to setup my systems iuntil I can install drivers
idk
i already have it connected to wireless in the live usb
i can also use ethernet
i just need to know what packages to install
ik
No profiles to tell you what to do
You gotta figure it out and configure it yourself
I love linuxtoo but I don't love making unnecessary work for myself
I prefer to install GNOME profile then tweak it after
I love how much freedom arch gives you
People complain about the risk of an update breaking arch systems and that's rare and usually affects people with non-standard configs
I've had to explain to so many people that arch is stable
I've never had a kernel panic or any issues really
But for what it's worth most arch users know how to fix their systems
I don't even need to Google most th ings these days
fuck it im pressing the fucking enter key
I've used some form of Linux since I got my first computer and have roughly 17 years of Linux experience and have experienced and fixed most problems on Linux. I didn't use Windows otuside the school computer lab until maybe 2018 when I used Mac then Windows for college.
cool
ive used linux for like
idk
almost a year?
i dont remember tbh
thx lol
i still use windows on my gaming pc
because pcvr and anticheat
i plan to un broke myself to buy another ssd
Steam on Arch works pretty well now days because of Steam Deck
i love the steam deck
i have 2
I love mine
because im dumb XD
I have a PC for gaming but it depends on if I wanna get up and move my dongle to it
Often I just plug up my Steam Deck instead
To the USB-C hub I have
It's nice having multiple options
