try nvidia-open

shut belfry
#

an option is probably to downgrade back to 535-550 aswell but that's way too big of a downgrade overall to be acceptable

true thicket
#

pacman -S nvidia-open

shut belfry
#

give me a minute, I got my favourite bug where sudo just doesn't recognize my pw so I gotta reboot rq

#

I'll @ you as soon as unreal is done installing and I switch to nvidia-open and give it a try.
Thanks for the advice!

shut belfry
# true thicket you're welcome

Sorry for the early @.
I tried switching to nvidia-open from nvidia-dkms, but that just causes mkinitcpio to fail and nvidia-smi to not recognize drivers.
I haven't switched drivers in a long time, am I missing something?

true thicket
#

@shut belfry did you regenerate grub when switching?

shut belfry
#

I didn't, good call, let me do that.

#

nah, I just did a full reinstall of nvidia-open, nv utils anb lib32 nv utils, as well as a grub cfg gen and mkinitcpio -P(which fails).

#

should I try to reinstall the zen kernel?

true thicket
#

@shut belfry try it and see

shut belfry
true thicket
#

@shut belfry unreal, the game engine, or a game running unreal?

true thicket
#

@shut belfry have you considered godot?

shut belfry
#

I've been using unity for years, godot simply doesn't do it for me and I am not a huge fan of the nodes system.
Not a fan of unreal system either but it's got the visual edge over unity and that's what I need it for now.
Wanna try playing around with cs2 demos and particles.

true thicket
#

@shut belfry Unreal Engine 5 or 4?

shut belfry
#

5

#

I tried several ue 5 versions, testing with 5.5 rn

true thicket
#

@shut belfry did you install it from the aur?

shut belfry
#

no, I got it from the unreal site because I don't have enough space in my root dir

shut belfry
#

wym

shut belfry
#

oh, I mean possible, but I am not the only one having it, a lot of people reported it on the nvidia site and ue forums, I was just wondering if somebody here had a clue how to work around it

#

I'd like to try building it from source(aur) but I have like 50 gigs left on my root dir, is there a way to somehow build it in another dir and have a symlink to root?

#

not sure how that'd work, can't say I am too smart when it comes to systems

shut belfry
#

well root is where packages go afaik, am I mistaken?

true thicket
#

sudo pacman -Qttdq | sudo pacman -Rns -

shut belfry
#

how come using timeshift on my root dir makes a complete backup of my system then?

true thicket
shut belfry
#

unreal is >70GB

true thicket
true thicket
#

then reboot

shut belfry
# true thicket pacman -Scc

that gave me like 2 additional gigs, still nowhere near enough

shut belfry
#

that's in ~

#

I'll try what gpt just suggested, setting a custom build path for unreal

true thicket
#

pacman -Q > packages.txt

#

pacman -Qm > aurpackages.txt

#

then upload those please

shut belfry
true thicket
#

@shut belfry we can shrink this

#

remove yt-dlp-git with the regular version

#

xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland-git with the regular version

shut belfry
#

can't downgrade hyprland from git, need latest

#

yt-dlp is quite small already but sure, I can do that

true thicket
#

vmware for virt-manager

shut belfry
#

I have both, virt-manager for gpu passthrough and vmware for a regular vm

true thicket
#

vesktop for the regular desktop version

#

unimatrix for cmatrix

#

replace jetbrains with vscode

shut belfry
#

recommendations are not even close

true thicket
#

python-pywall-16 with python-pywal

#

python-pywall-16 is not even in the aur

shut belfry
#

I'll remove that one completely, I am not using it anyways

shut belfry
true thicket
#

prismlauncher-qt5-bin for the native version

true thicket
shut belfry
shut belfry
true thicket
true thicket
#

why use jre8 instead of jdk8-openjdk?

true thicket
#

paru-debug

#

you can remove that

shut belfry
#

no clue what the diff is anyways but ye

true thicket
#

use wl-clipboard instead of clapboard-git

#

why use binder_linux-dkms?

shut belfry
#

I am already using the wl-clipboard but clapboard provides clipboard history, it's not a replacement but an addition

true thicket
#

replace the hyprland-git versions with the non git versions

shut belfry
shut belfry
true thicket
#

why use android-tools?

#

and android-udev

shut belfry
#

I was flashing a custom rom to my phone, needed those

true thicket
#

remove baloo

#

why do you have brltty?

shut belfry
#

I don't even know what that is

true thicket
#

why do you have debootstrap?

shut belfry
shut belfry
true thicket
#

why do you have discord and vesktop?

shut belfry
#

I was testing if screensharingg worked on discord cuz I hate vesktop

true thicket
#

why do you have dos2unix?

shut belfry
true thicket
#

remove ebook-tools

shut belfry
#

kde is bloated af

true thicket
#

and element

shut belfry
#

imma just remove the entire plasma anyways, I completely broke it either way

shut belfry
true thicket
#

why are you using plasma and hyprland?

shut belfry
true thicket
#

then remove it

#

pacman -Rns plasma

#

what flatpaks are you using?

shut belfry
true thicket
#

and why are you using intel-oneapi-common

shut belfry
#

the roblox player

shut belfry
shut belfry
true thicket
shut belfry
true thicket
#

pacman -Rns kio-extra

shut belfry
true thicket
true thicket
#

why use mingw-w64-binutils?

shut belfry
# true thicket feh

hmm, it seems to be missing some core functionality I use such as zooming in/out etc.

#

it is way faster than gwenview I must admit tho

shut belfry
#

oh, that's nice

#

thanks for that one

true thicket
shut belfry
true thicket
#

rdd is not recommended

shut belfry
shut belfry
shut belfry
#

if possible, I always just use Rs

true thicket
shut belfry
true thicket
#

then sudo pacman -Qttdq | sudo pacman -Rns -

true thicket
shut belfry
#

and -gtk file picker is pure ass

true thicket
#

xdg-desktop-portal-wlr and xdg-desktop-portal-xapp

shut belfry
#

-wlr is not recommended with hyprland, let me look into -xapp

#

-xapp is using gtk in the background with some elements of other des

shut belfry
true thicket
#

xdg-desktop-portal-gnome

shut belfry
#

I ran a script my friend gave me too so it's as clean as can be:

#!/bin/sh

AUR_CACHE_DIR=$HOME/.cache/paru/clone
AUR_CACHE_REMOVED="$(find "$AUR_CACHE_DIR" -maxdepth 1 -type d | awk '{ print "-c " $1 }' | tail -n +2)"
AUR_REMOVED=$(/usr/bin/paccache -ruvk0 $AUR_CACHE_REMOVED | sed '/\.cache/!d' | cut -d \' -f2 | rev | cut -d / -f2- | rev)
[ -z "AUR_REMOVED" ] || rm -rf $AUR_REMOVED

AUR_CACHE="$(find "$AUR_CACHE_DIR" -maxdepth 1 -type d | awk '{ print "-c " $1 }' | tail -n +2)"
/usr/bin/paccache -ruk1
/usr/bin/paccache -rk2 -c /var/cache/pacman/pkg $AUR_CACHE

#

nautilus is painful because it auto selects the search bar and a few other major things

true thicket
shut belfry
shut belfry
true thicket
#

ntfs-3g was built into kernel 5.15 no need for that package anymore

#

nvidia-dkms is only needed if you are not using a stock kernel

shut belfry
true thicket
#

remove libguestfs

shut belfry
#

that's likely why open didn't work

true thicket
#

do you use ranger?

#

skype

#

zoom

#

telegram

shut belfry
#

ranger - I wanna try to use it as much as possible but it's painful
skype - hurts but I need it for 1 professor in uni
zoom - sadly, uni
telegram - sometimes

shut belfry
# true thicket nemo/caja

I just tried both, I must admit I do prefer them to stock nautilus but they do have some fundamental flaws for me, like not sorting hidden before all, sorting capital letter dirs before the rest etc.

#

those are some of the main reasons I chose to use dolphin

shut belfry
true thicket
#

also thunar

#

why have neovim and vim?

shut belfry
#

yeah, I looked at all the cli file managers and ranger stood out, that was months ago tho so I can't remember why

shut belfry
#

imma remove it

true thicket
#

and winetrick?

shut belfry
shut belfry
true thicket
#

pacman -Q | grep vim

shut belfry
true thicket
shut belfry
#

yeah but I have neovim only, not vim

#

wym

true thicket
#

why use ydotool?

shut belfry
#

not sure if there's a more efficient way to interact w mouse pos on wayland wout interacting w wlroots directly

true thicket
#

now pacman -Scc

#

then sudo pacman -Qttdq | sudo pacman -Rns -

#

then reboot

shut belfry
true thicket
#

then paru -Scc

shut belfry
#

should I run my friend's script?

true thicket
shut belfry
#

uh oh 💀

true thicket
shut belfry
#

tyrns out I need ntfs3

#

that's what"s failing

true thicket
shut belfry
#

shit, it didn't load my network stuff yet, imma have to remove the hdd from fstab rq

#

done

true thicket
#

@shut belfry are you in?

shut belfry
#

yeap, when I sent the done message

#

I've been testing different image viewers, settled on viewnior

#

it's as clean as feh and has slightly better binds imo

true thicket
#

now check how much space you got now

shut belfry
#

56.6

#

no worries tho, I am building the engine into a custom path now, I edited the PKGBUILD and it's building to my Data dir now

#

we'll see if that fixes nvidia stuff

#

also, you helping me debloat the system was insanely useful, I've been meaning to do that for ages but never got around to doing it, thanks

#

I am way too tired to deal with this now, I'll do it tomorrow and @ you with an update

#

thanks again
