@night ginkgo please remove the archinstall-script flair as you don't need help installing arch with archinstall

night ginkgo
#

oh ok, i used archinstall. how do i remove the flair?

#

btw i looked around online and people with similar problems as mine said to remove xdg-desktop-portal-gtk but i dont have that installed.

the terminal app 'Alacritty' in particular always takes 30+ seconds to load, but xterm is instant

#

why use icewm?

night ginkgo
#

i like how light and oldschool it looks. im able to make a system that on idle uses 150mb of ram lol. ive done it in a virtualbox and other PC it actually works great for my needs.

heres the virtualbox version. (the problem doesnt happen here) 😄

i selected 'nvidia propritary' in arch-install

#

the gpu is gtx 760

#

very common recent problem..

#

dont think its my hardware or anything

#

everyone says this fixes it

#

problem is, i dont even have that installed

#

my arch is so barebones barely any packages are on it, yet i still have the 25second (some)app load problem

#

people say the default dbus timeout is coincidentally 25 seconds so its something related to that stuff.

dawn fable
#

@night ginkgo install xdg-desktop-portal-gtk

#

then reboot

night ginkgo
#

ok ill play around with that thx

dawn fable
#

you're welcome

night ginkgo
#

think that may have solved it but i found another bug so ill make a new topic i guess

dawn fable
#

@night ginkgo you can keep it in here

#

@night ginkgo do you have all amd?

night ginkgo
#

the pc im testing on has an old Phenom 2 955 processor and gtx 760.

#

the new problem is firefox works perfectly 1080p 60fps 0 dropped frames 'stats for nerds' youtube --- , but as soon as I go fullscreen its constantly dropped frames and lag. Turning off hardware acceleration does not change anything either.

#

what could cause that?

dawn fable
#

start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode for testing purposes to confirm that this is the issue.

#

The command line switch -safe-mode starts Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode

night ginkgo
#

ok good idea. by the way i dont even have a compositor installed. could that be why?

dawn fable
#

you don't have to have one, but it helps

night ginkgo
#

still happens when i do firefox-safe-mode . constantly steady dropped frames as soon as fullscreen

#

is something about the window manager getting in the way and lagging it?

dawn fable
#

set media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabled to false in about:config

night ginkgo
#

it is false by default

dawn fable
#

@night ginkgo enable it

night ginkgo
#

sadly same issue. i restarted ff too.

dawn fable
#

@night ginkgo is ublock orgin installed?

night ginkgo
#

yes it is. but funny enough i found the fix. it was the youtube Ambient mode setting. turned it off now its smooth in fullscreen

dawn fable
night ginkgo
#

is there an easy way to visually view all installed icons?

#

trying to fix up my .desktop files for the start menu

dawn fable
night ginkgo
#

hm?

dawn fable
#

in your file manager

#

so it turns out the long startup time for some applications was due to improperly installed graphics drivers

#

maybe it was running some kind of dbus check and then triggering the 25 second timeout before it moved onto the backup thing to proceed with the launch. thats my guess.

#

got all my problems fixed now once i properly installed the drivers
