#[SOLVED] Trying to dualboot windows and arch linux
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
I still hae a live USB with arch on it. I won't touch anything until someone is kind of enough to guide me through this.
I should say that I've already installed arch linux properly and sway and configured it all out, so it would be really nice if I could recover and get into grub somehow instead of having to wipe and restart
The only part I messed up was figuring out how to mount windows efi so grub could detect windows boot manager, that seemed to break it
and I think it's because I used /mnt instead of /boot/efi
ok
dual booting with windows isnt as difficult as it can seem
first of all
will u use different disks for linux and windows or do u want to install them on the same disk
?
ok nice
first of all u need to boot into windows
and go to the disk manager
u can open it by pressing win + r
then type diskmgmt.msc
okay let me clarify: I've done all of the steps you're about to mention, I've created a new partition, used rufus to get arch on my usb, installed arch linux, setup user and all of the things mentioned in thsi video here up to 18:16 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxqU1G8hKWk

almost, because grub didn't detect windows boot manager, so I tried the os-prober thing and uncommented something in a file
but it still wouldn't detect windows
ahhh ol
ok
one sec
i cannot help a lot with the os prober cause i just do not use it
i prefer just selecting the OS with the boot menu in my uefi
i think its the best option cause it is just simple
Fair enough, but now I have another problem which is that grub doesn't load
so if we can just fix that then I will also just stick to uefi
ok i can help with that
os prober is a good option but i just cannot help with that xd
yea so after inserting this command in the terminal, whenever I try to boot it'll crash and send me to dell xps 13's "auto diagnostics" thing and just shutdown the pc
so I'm only able to load into windows if I turn on safe mode or secure boot (whatever it's called)
and then I can use windows
just don't use Windows or use Windows 10
instead of 11 which requires secure boot
yea fair not but the issue right now is still that grub doesn't load
what do you recommend?
install it?
did your grub break and disappear?
I don't quite understand what you mean
I can see it in the boot order part of the bios
is what I meant
but I cant actually boot into it
because it just crashes and sends me to diagnostics
this command did it
sure I can do that yea
but I would have to start from scratch then no?
wipe the partition
and reinstall arch?
well I think this would be the best solution
damn
unfortunate
well anything I should keep in mind to do this properly next time?
because I spent pretty much my entire day today trying to dualboot
have you tried just installing the "os-prober" package and editing grub
yes, that's what I did initially and then I uncommented the line at the bottom of the grub config file
which still didn't detect windows boot manager
which led me to believe that the efi of windows wasn't mounted properly
for grub to detect it
so I used that command u see above
have you used this: sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
yes'
in this case, you most likely did something wrong when installing it
installing arch or ?
yes
you're probably right
but are there any guides you can recommend, I'm almost certain I did everything in accordance to the video I followed
if you're having trouble installing arch properly because it's actually supposed to install, you might want to try a more user-friendly method
it's still not very good
install it using calamares
not sure if it's userfriendliness I need or just a proper guide
I think the graphical installer will install correctly
Alright, I'll try this tomorrow, hopefully it works. This is also Arch Linux right?
yes you can read what it is, it’s just arch Linux with an calamares installer
Sounds good, thank you
@dark moth after installing arch linux again using this gui, how would I configure dualbooting with os-prober?
is it just as simple as installing os-prober and running the command sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
install os-prober uncomment the last line in /etc/default/grub and write sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
grub found entry of windows already!? if yaa mark this as [SOLVED] - thanks:)
nope, still struggling
anyone awake?
the acli didn't work unfortunately.
I'm getting "Failed to mount 'UUID***'"
I'm trying to completely uninstall grub now but it's still in my bios
not sure why it's there
It's in the Boot Sequnce
Sequence*
Don't know how to remove it
i still have ubuntu in my boot menu from a long gone installation too
Okay I found out you can delete them with Visual BCD
oh cool
Do you know what this Arch Linux Calamares is?
