sudo pacman -Syu
you may want to install a aur helper to make installing aur packages easier
yes
installed Syu
installed syu?
pacman -Syu
sudo pacman -S --needed base-devel
git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/paru.git or git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/yay.git
says its up to date
cd paru or cd yay
makepkg -si
cd paru or cd yay <---- this as one line?
first pick ether yay or paru
do I git clone both?
I did paru
alr did cd paru
now makepkg -si?
yes
1 or 2?
default
What will happen once its finished
you can now easily install aur packages now
287/288
compiling the last thing
finished
now you can remove that folder
folder?
can you name some pkgs you used on other os's
the paru folder
will it remove just by closing it
or is there a faster way
cd
rm -rf paru
without the cd?
nvm
did it
hostname then change it to whatever you want, then reboot
I just input hostname?
yes
in the terminal?
command not found
sudo hostname new-server-name-here
not found
sudo nano /etc/hostname
then change archlinux to a diff hostname
yes
saved it
and did ctrl x
then reboot
alr
rebooted
open the terminal now
yup
can you name some pkgs you used on other os's
wait what are pkgs?
packages
ie apps
oh apps
my b learning new terms to be expected
Figma
Photoshop
figma balls
lmao
Wait I didn't think about that
Works perfectly
paru -S figma-linux-bin
killer
tsu
are you good at ricing
yes
this is in gnome but idk is this possible in kde
I will have to do this today in a few hours
as of now I need sleep
2am
il add you
ok
@ember crater hey to download windows manager do I use paru?
at the start
@ember crater what wm?
App its hard to do.
I wanted to setup something like this
Basically a shortcut to type in quick applications
that is rofi
Is it hard to setup?
I might do it later but I def want to setup a nice theme
no, it's just recommended for wm users
To install ProtonVPN is it paru -S ProtonVPN-linux-bin ?
paru -S protonvpn
For Fgima why was it linux-bin
¯_(ツ)_/¯
killer
I forgot are you on KDE as well?
no
@ember crater
I am so clueless on how ricing works
is it easy to do on KDE Plasma?
yes
git clone https://github.com/catppuccin/gtk
git clone https://github.com/alvatip/Nordzy-icon
@ember crater
Whenever you want to change to a diff theme is there a one way command to restore everything or just manually
I def want to change the bar to be in the middle
This one already exists in the directory
but I did git clone the first one you sent
What does that do
cd .themes
mv gtk ~/.local/share/themes/
moves it to themes
@ember crater now set the theme
I inputed mv gkt .themes in terminal
now I write cd .themes
and mv gtk ~/.local/share/themes/
Now, copy the extracted “Global Theme” folder to ~/.local/share/plasma/look-and-feel.
then copy the extracted “Plasma Theme” folder to ~/.local/share/plasma/desktoptheme.
THis one says no file directory exists
Now, just go to Settings > Appearance > Application Style > Get New GNOME/GTK Application Styles
where is it the extracted global theme folder?
@ember crater the one in downloads or .themes
oh nvm yes
Wait so this is what I opened let me take a screenshot
@ember crater
clicked configure
then get new
THere is a windows 95 theme damn
these themes that I am looking at if I click install. Everything together will be set right
in just one click
oh wait nvm
I clicked on install Dracula
@ember crater Nothing changed
@ember crater you need to reboot after that
@ember crater How should I correctly update my arch linux so no breakage happens and how often should I do it. is it pacman -Syu or just paru?
sudo pacman -Syu
How often you update is up to you. The system I'm on now, I haven't updated in some time. Some people update weekly, some daily, some monthly. Often, if I find a configuration that I like with no issues, I'll hold off on updating.
Ah alr
I need to set up the latte dock on here
I thought it was naturally already added on kde
Ah wait nevermind did sudo pacman -S latte-dock
Update: learned how to rice made a very minimal clean theme
@lofty fable wait so what happens if my usb is unplugged while linux is running. It will corrupt everything?
Or do I shutdown and plug it back in
To fix it
It could corrupt the drive/install.
So, generally avoid it.
Is it also good to shut it down daily?
If I close it and then open it back up it boots quick
If it does happen on accident, shut down immediately, and then reinsert and reboot.
It's a matter of preference, mostly. I tend to keep my machines running almost all the time. With a USB pendrive install, you may want to shut down or at least suspend more frequently, just to go easy on the disk.
And if I wanted to use Linux on a diff computer I need to f2 to disable the security thing?
Correct. Well, mostly. On different computers (different motherboards) it'll be a different key.
For the past 2 days I shut it down completely when going to bed
So idk if I should keep doing that
Or continue
If that's what you feel, I'd say continue if you like.
My main pc is with nvidia idk if that changes something
The thing I'd mostly recommend against is leaving the machine off for a long time, especially with temp changes. It's best to boot sometimes, get parts moving.
The smaller usb what is it useful for now?
NVIDIA is the GPU. The motherboard is what determines the key to press.
You could use it to install arch on a different drive if you wanted. Could repurpose it for something else.
Yes cus when I mentioned nvidia people said it doesn't work well on certain desktops?
Currently I am running kde plasma
Another fresh usb would be needed right
It's a case by case issue. Intersections of software and hardware make the experience very individual.
If you wanted to install to another pen drive, then yeah, you'd need another pen drive. You could install it to many types of drives as well.
Do you update arch daily?
Not at all. I did update daily years ago, but I ended up getting a bad update for my system that wound up leading to a reinstall (I didn't have any backups either). Since then, I update when I feel. Sometimes I hardly update at all. If I wait a long, long time to update, I make sure to make a complete copy of my system in case something goes wrong.
I think a weekly or bi-weekly update schedule is probably good.
You can also update specific software rather than the whole system, if there's some specific thing you need updated.
I might do updates every 2 weeks most likely
I did one today for the first time
That depends on what kind of backup you want. One of the easiest ways to make a backup of a Linux system is to copy-paste the entire filesystem to an external medium.
You can also have other backups, smaller ones of just the home directory for instance. Settings you'd like to keep, etc. Password backups.
Here's the wiki page that pertains to backups, and it covers some other options: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/System_backup
For instance, to keep things smaller, you can compress your backup.
Interesting
Oh, @ember crater, another thing you can do with the smaller pendrive is troubleshoot if your system stops working. This applies to any (Linux) system. Like, if you can't boot into your system for whatever reason, you can still access the files on that system using the smaller pendrive.
Have both plugged in at the same time?
Correct. This is if you can't access your system after some updates or alterations.
You can even gain a backup this way if you can't figure out how to actually fix the system, at least you can still get your files and reinstall.
@lofty fable
???
THis popped up
how do I have only 196 left lol
Because my big usb has up to 16gb
I have intalled on the usb yes
the one 16gb
why?
@ember crater
Idk how to do it the other way
instead of installing it to your ssd?
ssd?
pc
I wouldnt know how to install it from there
With the usb I thought it was the easiest?
no
you installed it without the usb
just through ur pc?
flashed arch to a usb, then installed to my pc
same here
flashed the iso with the usb
then rebooted my pc plugged it in
went through the installer
I can see my internal drive with 237gb
and then my removable usb at 13.8
did you install it to the 237 one?
the usb that is connected is 16gb
so most likely no
I clicked on the name that was listed SanDisk 3.0
which was for the 16gb
Do I need to reinstall and choose the internal drive?
yes
Alright how do I make sure I dont mess anything up

Once you had arch installed you unplugged the ubs?
usb*
yes
and you justh ad it on ur intenal drive
had*
yes
Alright I need to do the same
because I picked it
old screenshot from 2 days ago
thats the one I picked
sda
the first one is what I needed?
yes
How do I reinstall this
reboot and take out the usb
then log into windows
use the same iso file but it will act as renewed
flash it?
yes, then reformat it
with the smaller usb?
no, the same usb
I used 2 usbs
I can deal with one right?
before I used 2 the smaller one for the isntaller and the main one that I am using now as the one that runs linux right now
use anyone that you want, that has enough space
Alright so I reboot and unplug it
log into windows
just reflash it right
use a new iso with the 16gb usb
flash it
yes
then reboot and plug it in
etcher or ventoy?
f2?
etcher
once flashed again do I f2? on the reboot again?
how are you flashing it?
through etcher
I select the iso
then pick the sdd
Alr wait il take a screenshot when there aigh
Il see you on the flip side
Back on windows
So
first step is the iso right?
yes
I will use the same downloaded one
and then for select target?
what's the date on the iso?
Should I just download the latest one again to be safe
if the latest = this month, then no
alr
that is the one I downloaded
ok
For the select target
this should be selected?
wait nvm
I need to use the same usb with the 16gb space right?
then flash it
reboot
f2
select the option
should put me in the instalelr menu
once I am there I instead select the first one that has 256gn
gb*
sda
sda?
that one
so the system internal drive
yes
Is it going to work because its also used for windows
I might be wrong about how it works but alright
I will fash it with my usb
for this first part
wait
do you want to duel boot with windows?
ok
what does that mean?
have windows and arch on the same sdd
Meaning I can switch between both?
yes
yes
you need to reboot to pick one tho
With the usb plugged in?
thath as arch instaleld
wait, answer the question please
Sorry I might of misunderstood
So when you were asking about the dual boot
Where I will be able to switch from windows and arch time to time yes that would be nice
But you can only pick one right?
go back to windows and make a partition
only one at a time, yes
How do I make a partition
at windows currently
open partition manager
make it enough space, I would suggest half
thats what its called on windows?
am I in the right place?
yes
So half
50gb
c:/ not the other one
the first one
cus I was looking at free space and as of rn 108gb
@ember crater 50 is too little
or becuase I am thinking about arch being my main but still wanting to have windows on the side
is 100gb ok?
I will have 8 left on the first one
For the most part I will have Figma, Photoshop, VSC, discord, minecraft as apps
those all work on linux
also, figma balls
I knew it
But yeah 5 apps on arch
the rest will fill up with images but that just barely takes up
visual studio or vs code?
visual studio code
1 or 2?
2
then that will work
so 5 apps in total
and if I do 100gb for arch and windows will have 8bg free
that's good?
As arch will be my main pretty much but windows will be on the side
windows for what?
As of now on the internal drive I have 108gb free
I will use 100gb for arch
if all of your apps work on linux, why need windows?
Does glorious core work?
its for my mouse
name of mouse please
Glorious model 0
Note: Software for our products is optional and only necessary for some of their more advanced features.
Sometimes used whenever I have the need to change certain things in settings
So pretty much I put in everything of the free space into arch
because of the apps I listed they work on linux so if thats the case then yeah
No need for windows
@ember crater https://github.com/enkore/gloriousctl
Alr then I am ready to just fully convert
no more windows
ok
But I def need to be guided that I dont screw anything
if I plug in my usb that I just used to run linux will something happen?
Because I need to re-flash
no
Alr I will plug in my usb and flash it with the iso
then reboot
and f2?
Formatted the usb again
Alr I will reboot
All set?
My secure boot control is off
Also for this leave it to uefi os?
yes?
Ok
@ember crater for disk configuration
Best effort?
@ember crater yes
First one
Which option
if you want
Did you have it as yes?
I hope I don't have the issue I had with the usb
Where it said my home folder was out of space
you won't
Alr I'll click yes
I will add all the additional packages
You sent from 2 days ago
ok
Alr added all of them
Need to make sure multi is set
yes
Hope the time sync wont be an issue then I will need to re do it
Omg it did it
Now will need to put it to false
Works now
Now need to wait for it to fully install
Also a the end for the chroot
Yes or no?
no
Still installing
Should be done soon
Killer will you be able to help setup the wifi ui so I can easily connect like last time
yes
Alr finished installing
Do I write shutdown now?
Then plug out my usb?
Or keep it in
reboot, then take it out
Once its off I take it out
Then boot it up
And it will automatically run linux
reboot then take it out when you see a black screen
Will it corrupt if I take it out when it's on again?
no?
I'll take it out now and then turn on my computer
Ayy I'm in
Sorry was worriee
Wait this time it already has the wifi button
Wait can you tell me about the AUR packaging that I might need to install again
first install a aur helper
Alr connected to the internet
What is the command for aur helper
yay or paru?
Yay
I'll need to download the mc launcher
I would recommended prismlauncher-qt5-bin
Cracked version?
Or does it work with premium
it's not a cracked version
no crack support will be given here
ok
Does it work with Microsoft
bedrock?
Java
then yes
Was it sudo pacam -S discord
@ember crater pacman
Just pacman?
Alr
Wait it says no permission
Unless im root
@ember crater also sudo
Is it safe to shutdown everytime before bed?
Now that I'm using internal
if you want
Alr on discord from arch
for the screenshot tool was it sudo pacman -S flameshot?
yes
you can also scroll up
@ember crater
yes
installed a latte dock
changed icons
and moved the panel on top
for yay I need to git clone it with the link?
to install yay?
@ember crater
yes
then yes
