Have you done sudo pacman -Syu to update the packages and the repository?
And have you set up mirrors?

or you can try and setup 'shared clipboard' in on of the tabs at the top. this will basicly make the machines clipboard and local clipboard the same, should be helpful

To install a package, you have to run it like this:
pacman -S example

Also you're going to want to sync your package repos. To do that run pacman -Syu That will sync the repos and issue a system upgrade.

Correct. And if you instead want to search for a package to make sure it's in the repo, you'd run pacman -Ss which will show you all results that match that query, if that makes sense.

it's a bad idea to do this, you should always -Syu instead, unless you have a good reason and know what you're doing

Yea Sy leads to partial upgrades and can easily break systems. There are very few circumstances where it should be used.
